6.2 Gasser Fuel Mileage Update

2011 Ford Super Duty F-250 Crew Lariat with FX4, 6.2 gas with 3.73 locker, 1100 miles getting 12.4 MPG
Fuel milage update, real world use, 6.2 gasser.

When I ordered the truck I went with the 4.30's instead of the 3.73's because by my calculations, on the type of driving I would be using the machine for that the fuel mileage would not be that much different than with the 3.73's and the towing would be better. I do not drive for hours on limited access highways at a steady cruise speed. In that case the 3.73's would show there merit.

The average speed calculation comes from the engine run clock and the miles driven between fueling. I do not let the engine idle anymore than necessary and get underway within 30 -60 seconds from start up. I drive in a consistent manner and do not zoom away from stop lights, as I see my share of them. Besides, only a fool would drive like a cowboy in a 6,500+ curb weight machine. The average speed is an interesting number because it shows just how slow actual point to point driving in a non-limited access road environment is.

So far I am very impressed with the new 6.2 engine, it's very smooth and powerful.

To Date: 2,965.7 miles on the clock

6th tank of fuel:
(Best mileage on a tank so far, finally had some open road use.)
engine clock: 09:30:00
miles: 348.2
average speed: 36.65 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 14.1 m.p.g.

7th tank of fuel:
(Towed my boat for 175 miles of this tank, or 55.22%)
engine clock: 12:18:52
miles: 316.9
average speed: 36.65 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 12.46 m.p.g.

8th tank of fuel:
engine clock: 12:15:10
miles: 372.2
average speed: 30.38 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 13.23 m.p.g.

I am really glad I ordered the 4.30's, I don't see the 3.73 guys doing any better in fuel mileage and this thing has great low end grunt. If I spent all my time on the interstate the 3.73's would look better. But I can't say enough about how great this thing is.

I just turned 1000 miles recently. I've noticed mileage increase as the break in continues. I do a lot of city driving with a little hwy driving. My last tank was 13.2 mpg & the tank before that was 14 mpg. I've done some towing this morning for about 60 miles and I'll post a good write up on that soon.

Before I purchaced my 2011 Super Duty I never expected good gas mileage, I bought my truck for a purpose, not for great gas mileage.
Look at the mini pickups like the Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota, they don't get much better gas mileage than the full size pickups, but they can't haul or tow the loads like the full size trucks.
Be satisfied that you own a Super Duty knowing you can do more with it than owning a mini pickup, also your 2011 Super Duty, gas is flex fuel, you can get E85 for 10 cents less per gallon.
You can make money with your Super Duty, plowing snow, hauling, towing a 5th wheel trailer (5th wheel trailers are getting more and more popular where some trucking firms will hire you to haul large volume, lighter loads, If I owned a 5th wheel trailer I can get a hauling job tommorrow hauling windows and insulation) " 85 cents per mile "
thinking about owning a 5th wheel trailer, but I have a full time job with lots of OT, if I didn't have a full time job I would own one.

All good points, yes this machine is NOT a Toyota Prius (Thank God!) and fuel mileage is not why you buy one. But I do think that for this machine to get 12 -14 mpg's under normal use is a plus for the 6.2 gasser. Machines like this use to get 8 -10 mpg's, with less power. I'm just saying. :banger:

Very interesting reviews here...I've been lurking and am having a tough time not going with the 6.2. I've been truely soured by the past Ford diesel and even more so when I built a spread sheet that broke down mileage costs. The new diesels just have too much to go wrong to make me want to try them. I'm thinking I might just go with a 6.2L F-350 this time around.

I've got a 66 mile a day commute (33 or so each way) and of that 28 miles of it is highway. I'm wondering if, with 4.30 gears I could pull down 14/15 mpg.

It seems very possible since my commute is pretty flat with about a 20' change in altitude the entire trip and usually stays at 70 mph and under.

Any thoughts? I'm currently getting 14.5 to 15 mpg w/ the a/c on in my Z71 CC/SB w/ 285 BFG ATs and 3.42 (yeah yeah they are TOO tall) gears.

As stated, I have only had my machine for a shade over 3,000 miles. (I have the 4.30 rear set) I have seen 14.1 on a tank, and I would not really call it "highway" driving on that tank full. I am sure you will see 14+, 15? maybe. I am happy with the 4.30's

I think you can pull 14 to 15 mpgs out of a tank with 4.30's since most of your miles will be hwy miles. With that much highway driving you will possibly be able to pull 15 -16 mpgs with 3.73's. I'm going out of town this weekend and most of my miles will be hwy miles. I'll report on my mileage from that trip to give you more feedback to work off of.

Thanks, I'm very interested to see what you'll get on the highway. 90% of my driving is the highway, 3% is probably back roads and 7% is off road / 4 wheel drive.

I'm guessing that with a nice bed cover (to keep equipment safe and dry) I should get 14-15 when I switch to the BF Goodrich ATs.

I live in the mountains 2000-3000 feet, when I travel down a mountain my mileage computer records a higher gas mileage, but when I travel up a mountain its a lower gas mileage, but the advantage is I have the reserve power to haul or tow loads up a steep mountain road.
You don't need the Super Duty with the 6.2 engine if you're not plannning on using it for towing or hauling heavy loads, you're better off with a 1/2 tuck with a smaller engine.
My 2011 Super Duty serves my perpose, hauling and towing heavy loads up and down long mountain roads, high ground clearance with a solid front axle and the heavy weight of the truck for going thru snow drifts and un-plowed roads in the winter, and driving in and out of my 60 foot driveway when its snowed in.
It costs me more to own this truck, lower gas mileage, but its worth it to me cause I expect more from my truck.

These new 6.2's are getting great mileage considering their applications are large, heavy, super duty trucks. 1/2 ton trucks with 4.6, 5.4's, 5.7's, 5.3's, or 6.0's (all makes) are getting the same if not worse gas mileage than the 6.2 and in some cases the truck is smaller. A couple of years ago I owned a 01 F150 Harley Davidson CC sb truck with a 5.4 engine which did not have a supercharger. I averaged 10-12 mpg with the truck with a mixture of city and hwy driving. I had a 25 gallon tank and the best I could get out of a tank of gas was 260-270 miles.

MC31,

I arrived to my destination in SC a couple of hours ago. My hand calculated mileage was 16 mpgs! I had the cruise set at 75 mph and the only time I slowed was due to heavy traffic. I was not towing but was hauling about 500 pounds of stuff and the family. My total trip distance was 211.5 miles, and it took 13.2 gallons to top it back off.

I don't get much better mileage in my F-150 with 5.4....driving empty with no passengers

HI Front Runner, Nix, 385HP and everyone...

Thank you very much for all your updates and info. I really appreciate you and everyone else taking the time to share all your experiences. It makes me feel more comfortable choosing a Ford. Even though I would love to have a diesel again, I just can't justify it (yet).

I can not wait to see the new F150 with the 6.2 vs the 250/350 SD's. When all the dust settles with new 150's, I can't wait to make a decision and place an order.

That's not bad fuel economy at all. I'd say if you were willing to run just 70 you would be in the 17 to 18 mpg range, maybe 19 to 21 if you were willing to run 3.73s as opposed to the 4.30s.

Thanks for the update.

I agree, and am pretty happy with it. I never got that type of mileage with my 6.4. It's also a plus that gas is 30-35 cent cheaper per gallon in my area. I would expect my mileage to be better if I had run 65-70 mph but I wanted to drive at normal traffic speeds. I passed a 2011 6.7 on my way that appeared to going about 65 mph. I'm pretty sure he was getting great mileage (probably better than mine) but within 5 minutes I didnt see him anymore and never saw him again. I was still passing quite a few cars but was getting passed by the speed demons. :wink2::jester:.

By the way I have 3.73's.

Yep...he probably was trying to break even on operating costs compared to a gasser so he was going 65 vs your 75 and speaking of speed demons I got dinged for a 85 in 70 last night....woopppsss...

That's real good news. Just a quick update, I refueled this morning, had a another 14+ mpg tankful (14.5), my normal driving week or so. Hey, I knew this thing was no econo-box when it came to the fuel department, that's not why I bought it, but for what a real machine this is and how I use it I am really happy with 14 mpg's. This thing is a real truck, not some F-150 poser box. As a side note, I did consider the F-150 before I ordered the SD, am soooooo glad I went with the Super Duty.

I'm just saying.
