All,
I just bought a truck with 17K, which had an oil leak when I bought it from a dealer (not Ford). I had the dealer bring it to Ford and get it fixed, they replaced a crank seal. I took delivery, and within 50 miles it was leaking again. I assumed they never fixed the issue, but I was just told by the Ford service manager that was the 4th crank seal on that truck, and it was leaking again!
I told him that I wanted them to find the root cause of the seal blowing, and that another replacement would not be acceptable. He seemed to agree with me on the phone, but I wonder how much influence on this process does he actually have? My guess is there is bad casting in the rear main area, or a defect in the rear crank main bearing. Does anyone have any other guesses?
My questions are:
- Anyone else having a similar issue? I lost 1/2 quart in 100 miles.
- Anyone know how many recurrences of the same issue would trigger a "lemon" 6.4L? The service manager says they would replace the motor not the truck, which is fine with me, I am just trying to gauge what the odds would be that a replacement engine would actually happen at some point.
- How has Ford been in general in standing behind issues on these trucks?
I have had a 2000 7.3L, and a 2004 6.0L. The 7.3L was bulletproof, the 6.0L had issues, but they were tolerable. I would kill (metaphor) for a 7.3L with 100 miles on it right now....
thanks for the opinions. I have been a member here for years, this site has been an extremely valuable resource, thanks to all for contributing.
