Hello. My 1984 f250 xl doesn't like to start, I can hear the solenoid clicking and the glow plugs are getting power. But it takes a good amount of cranking to turn over. I haven't checked the fuel psi but if the check valve is pushed in it squirts at a pretty good rate. When it does start there is a huge blue smoke cloud, larger than a puff you get on most diesel start ups. This makes me a bit nervous. Oil level is good. Any ideas? Can't see anything that looks like a leak in the fuel system.

Sounds like your glowplugs are dead. They should be 2 ohms or less each.

I haven't seen the article, I'll check it out. I changed out the glow plugs out in January or February. Are there lives that short? I think they were Bosch gp, I don't know where they sit in terms of quality plugs

So it was the glow plugs, and the second to last one snapped off, about three quarters of an inch is floating in the chamber. Tried a vacum and a prayer but no good came of it. Im pulling the heads tomorrow. Have all the fuel system off and manifolds. If I have to do one head gasket, might as well make a weekend of it and do both. So it's going to be a fun weekend. I'll give a shout when it's back rumbaling

If you haven't pulled the head yet try this...take the injector out of the cylinder and then use the vacum on the injector port. It's a bigger hole and the piece just might come out.

I'll give it a whirl, had a magnet on a stick that fit in but nothing came out, shined a light in and nothing came of it. Already ordered head set. Hoping to rule out if my oil leak is coming from the top end. Should be fun though. Do you know if the head bolts are torque yield, or something of that nature? Ford couldn't tell me anything.

The head bolts are NOT torque to yield, so just clean them real good and the threads in the block and re-use. Here is a pic of the torque specs:

If your talking about the Injector Pump, as long as the gears are timed right then the pump is installed with three bolts and one locating dowel. The locating dowel will put the IP in the correct position

The Haynes manual has a problem in the IP(Injection Pump) section, they tell you to unbolt the IP Gear Cover and never tell you how to recover from that error. They should tell you to only remove the gear cover for a complete rebuild.

Here is another article from Ziggster, this one on timing: Click Here.

Awesome, thanks for the other article. Now I'm just waiting in autozone. I got a head gasket kit, but they so kindly didn't have a head gasket in the kit. Lost about three days of work because they had compromised parts. Is there a directory for the articles? They have been more useful than the repair manuals.

So it's all back together, tried starting and there is a hard knock. I was looking at other threads and an issue seems to be that the injectors are bad, any guess if the knocking could be caused by dry injectors? Or is it likely the rids are f'd. Going to pull the valve covers tomorrow and put an eye inside.

Could be air in the injector line, they can be hard to bleed out.
Try barring over the engine by hand a couple of revolutions, just to see if anything is actually hitting.

Victory, bled and re-bled the fuel lines, along with a bit of ether she fired right up. I think another problem was since she sat for a while I had to build up compression, probably should have put a squirt of oil in the cylinders during assembly to encourage compression. But hind sight is always 20/20. A lot of frustration in this project, but damn it feels good to hear the rumble. Thankyou for all the help, greatly appreciated.

Do not squirt oil in to the cylinder, that is a good way to bend a rod.
The piston has very little clearance at the top of the stroke.

Enjoy.
