I have a '97 PSD myself but a friend is seriously shopping for a new 6.9. I think the new ones are still 6.9?? I had no way to offer any insight into the newer Ford diesels. Heck, I don't know all that much about the 7.3's!
Is there a general consensus about their reliability, etc? Any specific problems that seem to be recurring?
Tks,

the new motors are 6.0l. the last year ford offered a 6.9l was in 87. international still had a few up to 89 in the heavier trucks (i have seen it). think you may be looking in the wrong area for info. if you are looking for info on a 6.9l, they are twice as strong as a 7.3l idi. thicker walls, means less likelyhood of cracking, or cavatating. this is the number one reason for early PS as well as 7.3l IDI failures. i routinly remove 7.3l IDI upon failure to install the 6.9L. motor is cheaper (i wonder why??!!), and they will outlast a 7.3L by two fold. all this coming from a guy WITH a 7.3L idi, and a 93 with a 6.9L reviva motor.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

i had a customer with an 04 6.0l f550 catch fire it the wiring bulkhead for the motor. seems there is a problem with this in certain models and timeline built trucks. took ford 3 weeks to get it straightened out in his truck. the sad part was the mechanic said he was getting pretty good at fixing them... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
