I was wondering how hard would it be to put a 7.3 ps into a 6.9 idi's place? What kind of modifications would I have to do to the truck to get the motor in? Will the power stroke bolt up to the 4spd?

Thanks for the replies

it wuld be a nightmare! the wiring for the powerstroke from an idi would be helacious. A idi can run off of a double a battery just about all it needs is 12 volts to the fss. If you wnat power get a turbo on you 6.9 an intercooler, propane and a pump and injectors from ken at dps.

I'm with ROoster on this one. Keep that 6.9, soup it up, and run it.

Ken at DPS can turn that truck into a 13.x second sleeper... or just build it to tow better. Don't discount the IDI engines--very reliable and very durable.

Do a little research with an International dealer on a T-444E with their engine only electronic engine control box. That way you won't have the worries of all the integrated engine/transmission interactions of the PCM used by Ford. An older T-444E equipped IH truck or school bus application with manual transmission would be a good place to start.

I believe there are several different bell housings available. You'll need the one to mate to your transmission (may be a Ford unique item), otherwise, all the hardware should mate up. As with any swap, be prepared for surprises.

I think the 6.9/7.3 and early PSD all used the same bellhousing and adapter plate. Just as long as you get a pre 'Super Duty stroke and the neccessary flywheel and stuff from the PSD, or just upgrad to a SMF from Carolina Clutch. You would need all the wiring and computer and what not. A wrecked '94-97 F-series with a ZF-5 would be a good deal as you pretty much need the whole donor vehicle to make it work.

I got to thinking instead of the power stroke would it be easier to install a 7.3 idi that was turbocharged from the factory.

the factory turboed idi's are only 10 hp more than a n/a idi. If you dont agree talk to mel on the 6.9 and 7.3 forums hell show you the numbers. the cheapest thing to do is turbo, pump and injectors from ken, intercooler, propane, and the gov. spring mods. email ken and ask him about his idi hes puttin together.

If you put in the turbo 7.3 idi (turbo pistons, lower compression, heavier connecting rods, valves etc) wouldn't you have the peace of mind if adding a turbo or propane etc?
