...for busted head bolt removal...anything else I should do to it while it's there? I'm going to put as many goodies I can afford into this block, I want a new motor if I'm going to these lengths. It will have a fresh ATS turbo.

Thanks,
Jon

Did you mic the bores for size and roundness?

You have this listed in your signature
1990 3/4 ton turbo
. Is the engine a 6.9L or a 7.3L? A 6.9L has 7/16"-14 head bolts, a 7.3L has 1/2"-13 head bolts.

I'll mike the holes soon as I get the Pistons out. The engine I'm rebuilding is a 6.9, like originally posted...not the engine I'm currently running.

Sounds like you need to do everything normally done during an engine teardown. I'd do new rings, check piston to cyl wall clearance, remove cyl wall glaze and get new correct cross hatch pattern, replace rods and mains or at least Plastigage old bearings. Complete valve job, check valve guide "slop", heads for cracks, etc. Check crank, cam, and IP gear backlash (generally OK). Check for excessive wrist pin play. Replace all seals, install Speedi-Sleeves if needed on rear main seal surface and/or crankshaft pulley, inspect all other moving parts, rocker arms, cam lobes, etc. Unless mileage is unusually high and no foreign material has been in oil, cam bearings usually show hardly any wear and can be reused. When assembling check crankshaft and camshaft endplay. There's probably 1/2 dozen other things my still half asleep brain can't come up with yet. :)
When removing pistons, don't bend, break, remove or lose the piston cooling nozzles (know by the *experts* on the other sites as "oil squirters") Supposedly they're pressed in on early engines and no longer available.

I think the coolers were bolted in on this rebuilt 6.9 I'm tearing down for parts. I'd use this motor but a few sleeve skirts are busted, so I'll just hang on to this block jic and build the block that it replaced. At first I didn't have time to get the bolts out of the first block, so I just found another and dumped it in. Now my 7.3 is growing on a removal as I need turbo work, oil cooler work, exhaust work, and the auto tranny is getting some issues....so I'm going to go back to my very first idi, with the t-19. Luckily I had just rebuilt the heads for the 6 before this 7.3 turbo with a better body came up, so that's done.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll have a lot of questions, my budget is about 4K, but I'll want Russ to replace my cartridge, larger ex housing, and logger cam. I have a set of III injectors from him so I may get a bigger pump also, new gaskets, and machine work... so I'll proly end up with a grand after those parts and work.
