I have my sender in the PTO cover, within an inch from the top of the oil level (see the bung on the same side, further back). It is well protected and sees the "top oil temp" at that location.

I don't pay much attention to it empty, but loaded on a cool day it will be somewhere around 200F, and on a hot day and a big climb in the indirect gears, it will reach about 260. Obviously 5th (no gears loaded) is the coolest gear of all.

There are a few rubber grommets with little or nothing in them, and you can sneak a wire through that way.

when going this route, is it better to put it in the drain or the fill plug

I have faithfully saved pics of every mod on the truck, but unfortunately they are all high res, and I don't have the software (or can't find it in the computer) to drop the resolution enough to host on this site.

Just guessing I would say the drain, since it has fluid on it all the time. The fill plug would only get splashed. Just swap out the fluid for some fresh Mobil 1 Syn ATF at the same time.

Pat-

I actually like the idea of putting the sending unit in the PTO cover. That keeps it out of the way for the fluid changes. Did you weld a bung on it?

I also installed my sender in the PTO cover using the thick cover from an Eaton roadranger with a 3/8"NPT Pipe bung. I also siliconed a magnet in the cover to hold any metal fragments that may float in the oil.Picture.

As for routing the sender wire, I used the hole where the accelerator cable goes through the firewall in the gassers and found a grommet at NAPA.

I put a brass reducing bushing into a threaded hole and silver soldered it in place. Works like a darn.
