Last night I was driving home from Oklahoma in my 99 F-350 7.3 6-speed Manual and got to a little town, stepped on the clutch to downshift and I couldn't get the shifter out of gear, got a little hairy trying to stop. At any rate, I ended up shutting off the engine, shifting to second, starting the truck in 2nd gear with the transmission engaged, shoving it to 3rd and then 5th. (I know, I know, but I had to get home)I drove it that way about 200 miles. I only had to restart it in 2nd at 2 turnpike booths. From looking at other posts here, I think I probably need a new clutch, most people seem pretty pleased with their LUK clutches.

My questions, does this sound like I need a new clutch? If somebody knows a cheaper solution, by all means sound off.
What kind of damage do I need to look for in the transmission after trashing it the way I did?

TIA you guys(gals) have always been great in providing me with good suggestions

Had the same problem with my 99. Ended up floatin gears for a while until I could get a straight answer from some mechanics. Turned out to be a clutch, throwout bearing and shift fork.

If it's a stock clutch it will always be somewhat crappy. BUT, before you tear into it, go to ford and get a master/slave assembly and replace that. It could be that the master/slave gave up and you could just replace them and be back to normal "crappy". Just make sure you get the pre-bled kit with the master and slave with line in the big box. Get a master cylinder rod(or break yours out of the old master cylinder) and get the little plastic bushing that goes in the eye of the rod and then snaps over the pedal pin. If you've never driven an aftermarket clutch and the master/slave is the problem with yours then you could be back to the way it was by changing that. And if it still doesn't work you can install the new master/slave when you change the clutch.

Stan,

I am running the LUK in my truck and love it. No complaints at all and what an easy pedal- it is like clutching a Honda.

In my case the cluchfork bent in half, I was unfortunatley on the ice on Winnipesaukee in NH when it occurred. Thanks AAA+ for paying for the 150 mile tow to Pro-Built Transmission in Holbrook, MA for the repairs. Pro-Built did an awesome job. That was 50K ago and it still feels like new.

There is an upgraded fork now. Replace the pilot bearing with a Kevlar model.

Good luck!

John
