Hey all, new here, looking for some help. Have a 1995 Powerstroke, and recently started having problems. The truck started fine until last week, when the temp. hit -1F. Now, it still starts fine, only takes a few cranks, but will only run a few seconds, then starts shaking and running rough, and dies. It will start right back up, up to ten seconds of cranking, but still, dies after few seconds. Thought it might be fuel filter, as it was quite dirty, changed, no improvement. Today is much warmer, well above freezing, but same problem. Starting to look like cold weather was not the cause. Haven't really had time to start digging, just looking to be pointed in the right direction, on where to start. Any help would be great.

I had a similar problem and it turned out the oil needed changed. How long since your last oil change? These engines use high pressure oil to fire the injectors and when it starts breaking down they will not fire. It would do OK if plugged in.

I went to Shell Rotella Synthetic, no problem with firing and running now.

Just changed oil two weeks ago, as I only bought the truck about a month before. I do have some limited experience with these engines, as I do a lot a work on my father in laws truck. Thanks for the thought.

Add some lubricicty additive like PowerService or Stanyadyne .Sounds like you have some crap fuel . Or you have some crap in the tank. Did you check the FPR screen ? Do you have good fuel pressure ? If the truck sat for a while before you got it there could be lots of nice stuff in the tank .When you changed the fuel filter was it black ? Did you look inside the filterbowl for particles of crap ?

doesn't seem to be a problem with getting fuel to the motor. When it dies, there is always fuel in the filter bowl, and the bowl was clean when I changed filters. Wondering if the CPS can act like this, or if it might be the IPS. I'm hoping it isn't related to the hpop, or the injectors, but don't know what it might be, if fuel is reaching the motor.

How many miles on injectors or engine

Do you have a fuel leak? My truck done the same thing and it turned out to be fuel restriction sensor at the bottom of the fuel filter bowl. Had a guy tell me that I was loosing prime from the leak and that is why the hard starts. Replaced the sensor and havent had any trouble since. My be something else just my 2 cents worth.

Check fuel, if fuel is ok, maybe an IPR is going bad or the CPS on front of engine!! Had same problem with mine a while ago and the CPS was going bad, would run for a few seconds then stall!!!

I had this almost exact problem. Only mine would take about 20-30seconds of cranking before it would fire up. It would die about 3-4 times than stay running. But that was at like -50. Everything has warmers on my truck too. Turned out to be oil. I still had 15w40 in it because I drop up to alaska from tx. I never got to test it in -50 but -30 with 5w40 full syn rotella it quit doing it all together and ran a whole lot smoother. I figure it was the HPOP not able to maintain pressure till the oil thined a bit. But I guess you never explained if yours would run better after it warmed up. If it still runs like crap after it warms up thats not your problem. If not I would check all the normal PSD stuff. Fuel pressure, FPR screen, UVC harnesses, ect.

The truck only has around 140,000 miles on it. It does seem to get a bit smoother after it warms up, but yesterday was well above freezing, and had the problem worse than ever. I couldn't even get it to run long enough to warm up. I'm going to look for a fuel leak today. Thanks for all the posts, I'll let you know.

Check the valley for any standing fuel. Do you know if the lift pump has ever been changed? Sounds like pump is going bad also did you check the fuel pressure on the schrader valve? Give us all the info u can on truck ie, stock any mods etc. Poss weak batteries injectors must have 10.5 volts to fire. just my .02

Checked fuel pressure, around 50 psi. looked in hpop reservoir, down on oil. I topped it up, and the truck smoothed right out, and is now running fine. It was sitting for a couple of days before these problems started. What might cause the reservoir to loose oil? (sensor leaking, pump itself?) What is the lift pump? BTW, checked batteries, both good. As far as I know, the truck is stock, but the turbo and the hpop res. are both painted yellow, almost a CAT color. I assume they were changed. I am anticipating future problems, and can only assume it will be hpop, or the reservoir. Let me know what you think, and thanks for all the help.

I sucked out 4quarts of oil, replaced with 4 quarts of oil ran it for 10 min, then replaced with 3 quarts of oil and 1 bottle of prolong (booster) that I bought at autozone. It is usually used in gas engines. My truck seems to run better. Hope this helps
