Hello,

My name is Jared. I need some help if anyone has any ideas. I have a 1994.5 F350 7.3 powerstroke. It ran great then this stalling issue came about. It started by stalling while ideling and rarely. For no reason and would not run roughly, just instantly die. It would not immediately start right back up either. After maybe 5 minutes it would start right back up and run normally. It started out rarely, then it has became worse.

From reading other posts I thought for sure it was the CPS. I replaced that, but no luck. Still the same problem.

I cheked all the fluids. The oil was about 3/4 full on the "normal" dip stick. I filled it exactly to the top of the "normal." It seemed to be fixed. I couldn't believe it. It was fine for about two weeks, then the problem was back. So I'm assuming the oil level was just a coincidence.

Now it has became worse. It will only run for about 30 seconds then it's done.

I'm lost and dont know what to do with this now.

Any ideas???

Thank you very much!

Jared

First, check your fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the drivers side of the fuel filter housing. You can use a tire gauge or simply unscrew it and install a 0-100 psi liquid filled gauge(about 30 dollars). You're looking for around 40 psi at idle and it should be able to maintain it.

Could also be that you're losing High Pressure Oil to your injectors. This could either be injector o-rings, IPR valve, ICP sensor or HPOP. I would start with your IPR and Injector o-rings. Go to your local auto parts store and get a liquid filled 0-5000 psi gauge(about 30 dollars) and have them make a 3 foot hose (also 5000 psi rated) to hook to the gauge and to the oil rails on your cylinder head. This way you can watch what kind of pressure your building while cranking the motor and while it's running. You need to check each head individually. If they show the same then I would change your IPR. If they show different pressures then you could have injector o-ring issues on the weaker head. Your engine needs about 500 psi to start and it should build very quickly.

Have you checked the fuel filter. It could be that, or a fuel inlet restriction, i.e crap in your tank. It could also be that your fuel transfer pump is failing. I am not yet sure how the fuel shut off solenoid works on this diesel, as I am a new owner, but this can be a symptom of a failing shutoff solenoid, or just connections needing to be cleaned on one as well.

Mine had a problem with the fuel heater in the fuel filter housing shorting out, causing the truck not to be able to run. (thanks again to the guys in the forum for their help). As mine could not start back up, and was blowing fuses, I don't think that this is your problem.

Fuel filter is a good cheap place to start. You'll need a pressure guage to confirm your transfer pump's pressure for sure, but you can open the valve to see if there's fuel there (top of the engine under the cover over the fuel lines).

I hope this gives a few ideas to explore. Good luck with it.
