I bought my new to me 2002 F250 CC SRW with the 7.3 last weekend. It has 122000 miles on it so far. Previous owner had this Superchips Micro Tuner and had used it in Tow Safe Mode when he pulled his fifth wheel camper. I know from reading thus far that this is not the greatest tuner on the market but it came with the truck and at this time I don't have plans of doing anything else to the truck or getting another tuner/chip. My question is would I be better running it in the stock mode all of the time and only using the tow safe mode for when I pull my trailers, or will I get better mpg with it in tow safe mode? It also has hi performance mode, but I don't plan on using that either. As of right now, the rest of the truck is stock and I don't have any other EGT gauges or anything to do any monitoring. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Well if I were you the first thing to do is install gauges. No matter what type of chip/tuner you have no truck should be operated without having gauges !! I have the Superchips 1805 and just ordered an DP F5 chip. I wouldn't pull anything with your truck until gauges are installed! Good Luck.

I pull a 12,000 lb (empty) toyhauler with mine and a 1705 in tow-safe...no problems. Is there a better tuner, probably. Will your truck spontaneously combust with a 1705, NO, but I also suggest you get at least the EGT and Trans temp gauges. Then drive it by the gauges.

I've had the 1705 since '04 or '05 and have towed thousands of miles.

Your results may vary.

I got the 1700 from a guy a couple weeks ago and when it asked if I tow, I selected "no". I guess that means race tune was installed. I noticed a significant gain in both power and fuel mileage. I have no gauges yet, but last week I did tow my Focus 10 miles, car and trailer are about 4,800 pounds give or take.

I guess my point is that if everyone says these are crappy tuners, and I noticed this much improvement- I surely will be blown away with a custom tune. This will do for now till I get one.

BTW, what's the specs on the 1705 and the 1700? Mine was new, but had no packaging so I'm not sure what Superchips "claims" it adds...

The 1700 has 2 settings, 60 & 80hp, with no code reader.

The 1705 has 3 settings, 70hp tow safe, 90hp tow performance, up to 6000 lbs & 110hp no tow, with a code reader.

Thanks for those numbers.

When they differentiate between tow and no tow, is that just a liability thing because they don't know whether you have gauges or not? I'm assuming this is the case...

You're asking for opinions, so I'll give you mine.
Get gauges!!......VERY IMPORTANT!
or, do yourself a favor;
if you're not open to spending $250 for a set of gauges, then pull the tuner out, sell it and call it a day; put that extra cash in your pocket and at least reduce your chances of melting anything.
Just my opinion.
Yes, it's THAT important. You NEED gauges. That couple hundred bucks could save litterally thousands; (and by thousands we're talking a minimum of $3000 and as much as $10,000 or more)...no joke. I'd run a EGT and Trans temp even on a stock truck w/ no tuner. Those 2 are a must even if not towing.
If I were to put 1 above the other for a COMPLETELY STOCK truck,....I'd say the trans temp is most important.
For a truck with a tuner, EGT and Trans are equally important IMHO.

Yes, as long as the current truck is reset to the stock tune. Not a terrible tuner but does not change shift points like modern chips do.

Slightly different view...when I bought my '99 it too came with this same tuner. I ended up going in a different direction and went with the Edge CTS which not only gave me a tuner, but the ability to have a touch screen with up to nine gauges, all of which I can choose from. I pull a heavy 5th wheel at times and love the performance. There are now a number of different touch screens that do this and I think you might want to research them and see if that is a direction you may want to turn.

With the Edge it must be plugged in at all times, at least the older version I have does. When you want to switch programs, it takes about five minutes or so, so that is a PETA compared to the switch on the fly. The last I checked, Edge also only is compatible with PC and not with MAC. You can plug your PC into it and the firmware will update. The techs at Edge are great to work with if you have any problems...I have spoken to the engineers a couple of times to fix some issues. I'm extremely satisfied with the performance in all modes and the service I have gotten. I love the gauges options as a big time plus.

the 1705 is a programmer so you plug in and put your new program in and unplug and run that program till you want to change than repeat

Actually with the 1705 you download the factory or the program that is on the PCM at the time to the 1705. Then you upload the new program from the 1705 onto the PCM. The 1705 is now vin locked to that vehicle and can not be used on another vehicle until the stock program is reinstalled and the performance program erased.

This is where you can find 1705's at discounted prices, they are vin locked to the vehicle that they were used on and can not be used on a second vehicle. They can be used as a code reader or a boat anchor.

With a 1705 you have to stop and download and then upload a tune.

With others you can switch as you are driving down the road.
