Hey everyone

I have questions. I have a 2001 7.3L with 4r100 transmission with 265,000 miles.

In the next year or so I plan on buying a travel trailer that I will be pulling with the family. I use the truck now just to getting 4 wheeler back and forth to the hunting camp.

Truck is in good running execpt winters hard to start.

What would be recemmondations for aftermarket for this truck for HP for towing. I want to make it as reliable as possible.

Should I have a mechcanic go through and do any major work like heads or injectors or turbo upgrade

Or should I just due exhaust, filter kit and a chip.

And should I do anything to the transmission its factory never been worked on. like valve job or new torque converter

Any recemendations would be great

Thanks
Jerome

You're at the upper end of transmission life so you can either wait for it to self destruct or proactively replace it with a new build. Depends on how willing you are to deal with this in the middle of a trip. Upgraded transmission cooling is a must if you are towing as are gauges. Upgrade to the ford severe duty AIS as well. Tunes are great but might give you enough extra horses to throw a borderline transmission over the edge.

I would first upgrade the air intake with either an Airaid or S&B or do the 6637 intake mod., the next thing is too open up the exhaust, then replace the tiny arsh stock cooler with the 6.0L tranny cooler. But with 265,000 on the tranny your going pretty good IMHO but it will give up the beans sooner or later. Then you can go with the PHP Hydra chip:thup: they have all kinds of tunes, it is the best bang for your buck when it comes too tuning.

What is the size of the trailer your looking at getting????

Also do your research of a good WD hitch with a dual sway system if your trailer is going to be over 25ft.

The guy that rebuilt my transmission(23+ year Ford tech)took the Banks TransCommand out and advised me to stay with the factory shift control. I didn't realize how hard it shifted until he took it out. Now it shifts firm, but not hard. Besides, if you go with a programmer, or "chip" it will likely change the shift points and firm them up also.

Do not waste your money on a banks kit. Get intake (id recommend ford ais for towing), 4" exhaust, billet compressor wheel, 6.0 trans cooler and a hydra chip. Plan on a trans overhaul soon. If you can't swing a bts or john woods find a good shop that will do a trans go kit and a triple disk converter.
