I recently purchased a 93 turbo idi. Truck has 143k on it. Always maintained, seems to have cat ec-1 red coolant in it. 2 days after i bought it, it developed a loud belt squeak. Someone sprayed that black belt dressing on it and there were chunks stuck on the smooth idler pulleys. I cleaned them up with no change. So i replaced the idler pulley, no change. Then I tried the tensioner. After I replaced the tensioner, the first drive the truck temp gauge started climbing up to M on normal. It NEVER went even close to that before. Always went to O then the t-stat would open and it would run on N all day long. It only did this under acceleration. I pulled over and shut her down for a minute to check the belt, then it cooled back to N. Why would changing that tensioner cause that unless it was bad and not turning the pump enough? I still have a squeak too. This rise in temp was only after driving about 1-2 miles. On my way back home it ran between o and r. Still higher than it normally does. Was this just a fluke and my t-stat stuck maybe? I am at a loss.

Sounds like you have a pulley shaft seizing up. Check AC compressor, Alternator and Water pump bearings like to go bad in those. You have serpentine belts, they don't squeal.

Agreed. Take the belt off and spin everything by hand. Anything that feels tight, suspect it as a possible problem.

Did you check the tension of the belt, with the old tensioner vs. the new tensioner?

As for the noise, did you check the other pulleys for contaminants? I'm not familiar with the IDI serp belt system, but IIRC, at least the vacuum pump runs on a smooth pulley.

IIRC the smooth pulleys are Water pump, Vac pump and idler @ tensioner.

Yes i check the tension of the belt both ways. The deflection seems about the same. I put the old tensioner on this afternoon and took it for a drive. I can't explain this, but the squeak was almost gone, but my temp did go up to about R on the gauge during the initial warm up. Then once the t-stat opened it bounced around from n to o, but never got as warm as it did yesterday. I kind of thing it might need a t-stat. The truck sat for a while over the winter, so maybe its sticky. I also did check all the other pulleys. Nothing seemed too tight or too loose except for the power steering pump had a little in and out play in the shaft. No wobbling though. Chuckster, the water pump is a grooved pulley on this one, but vac-idler-tensioner are smooth. Thanks for all the help so far guys. I will drive it again tomorrow and see what she does.

In/out play on the power steering pulley is normal. Best way to check for sticking pulley is to remove the belt and let it sit overnight. Then spin each by hand in the morning.

Been working on a lot of chevy's lately, they have smooth W/P pulley, brain fart LOL.

I've had severall squeak issues that never went away on trucks. I've cleaned all pulleys, replaced all idlers/tensioner and there was still an intermittant sqeak. I think its from the pulleys not being perfectly inline with each other. I've gotten rid of the squeak on every one with a Goodyear Gatorback belt. As long as it's not a dragging pulley, the noise goes away, every time. You can have coolant pourin from a water pump on them and barely hear a chirp.

Continental belts are basically the same thing

I had a chirp I couldn't find, turned out to be the water pump dripping on the belt when it would be shut down while there was still pressure on it. The drip would stop when it cooled off, then come back after shut down just enough to get some on my cheap belt. A good high dollar belt might have stopped the chirp, but it would have kept me from finding the water pump leak. Lesser of two evils? Or just so tight I squeak when I walk and trying to make excuses?
