Step 1: Purchase 2002 F250 SD with 7.3LPSD
Step 2: Add Hypertech Max Energy, Remove Muffler, Add Tymar Intake
Step 3: Program to stage 2, increase of 6 mpgs hwy (sweet):bouncy:
Step 4: Love it, decide to change to stage 3 to examine other possible increases in mpgs
Step 5: Drive 2 miles, attempt to pass vehicle

Yields: Loud whistle from wastegate (overboost?) followed by immediate (and loud) POP! :jawdrop:

Now instead of, " WOW, I love my truck and its increased...well..EVERYTHING!"............it's, " When did I start towing a 10k pound trailer around town?"

Literally that is what it feels like. Happened Thursday.

a)I tried tuning computer back to stock and back to stage 3, no resolve.
b)Checked for missing hose clamps..all good
c)Read online about turbo problems...none of the symptoms fit
1. Turbo is definitely spooling up...in neutral to OD
2. Wastegate is releasing excess exhaust
d) Fooled with downshift problem
1. With trailer (1000 pounds) going uphill tranny downshifts fine but just won't go anywhere (nowhere fast anyway)
2. Slowing down for traffic or red lights, tranny downshifts to keep pace with speed
3. Floor the pedal with no load results in a feeling silmilar to that of a Go-Cart with centrifugal clutch and about a 5 hp engine

So I'm thinking Tranny, but my low-end torque and acceleration still exists from 800-1600 rpms. My throttle response has seemingly dissappeared along with the "throw-your-head-back" acceleration on the interstate or in traffic.

I have been able to manage to get to work, and tow our small construct. trailer around, and still getting 20 mpg even with the dissapointing performance. But I sure as hell ain't pullin out in front of a dumptruck going 50mph and still question trying to pass a Prius.

Can anybody give me a clue on where to proceed to next? Thanks- Brian

Do you have gauges on it? Towing a trailer with tunes is suicide without gauges - plus they would be real useful right now. What is your boost. The loud pop points towards blowing a boot. It might not have slipped off, but rather ruptured. The tears are hard to see sometimes. You can pressurize your intake side with a tool from dieselsite or you can build one yourself. http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=607

Make sure your MAP sensor line is still on and intact as well.

You say your wastegate is releasing excess exhaust? What's up with that?

You checked the hose clamps on all 6 boots? What about inspecting the boots themselves? Sounds like you blew an intercooler boot to me.

Thanks guys. Just got home from work, I'm gonna inspect the boots like F350_6 suggested, hopefully it's that simple. I was looking for something missing, not an actual hole.Just gotta wait for the sucker to cool down a bit before I go messin around the intercooler.

@RT, you're right, I should have gauges- but I don't. At the moment I am walking that line between power and disaster until I can afford gauges. I should be good with an EGT and Boost right?
Also, in response to your question, I was under the impression (obviously not a diesel nor turbo guru) that a wastegate releases excess exhaust to lower boost rather than boost itself. Is that not correct? I made the comment basically to say that the wastegate seems to be working properly, without actually just saying it.
Also, I will be checking out that MAP sensor too.

Thanks again, I'll let you know what I find.

Alright, just checked the MAP sensor hose and vacuum lines and they seem ok. Still too hot for the boots ( woose maybe? ) Also, I was thumbing around in my haynes manual and came across trouble code explanations. I know I am having CPS problems ( the windshield wiper issue) so I am used to the codes throwing when I hook up the H-tech. This time I actually looked at what the PCM is telling me and it is in fact p1248- Turbo Boost not detected. So it must be the boots or something similar. We'll see in a little bit.

On a side note, code p1249 is Turbo Wastegate not detected- would that be identified along with the p1248 or would one supercede the other? I ask because I said "the wastegate seems to be fine" but would the PCM tell me even if the loss of pressure is predominant to wastegate failure?

I think you're on the right track with a blown boot. I would suggest transmission temperature and EGT as required with boost as nice to have. ISSPRO makes a nice setup - easy to install. ISSPRO Gauge Kits for Ford Powerstroke from DieselManor PM caryt on this site - I think he can beat their price.

Thanks RT, little too much for me at the moment. Need to get them soon as I do not want to regret the decision later. They are exactly what I would get though. I appreciate it.

So let's call WildRice....or Brian -unobservant ( possibly borderline un-intelligent). So I dug out my ratchet and socket and made my way under the hood. Felt around for holes or tears in the reachable boots- nothing noticeable. Went for my first intercooler boot ( you know, the one right by the driver side battery) and went to put my ratchet onto the hose clamp when...wait....what the?....where's the hose clamp?......where's the fricken intercooler pipe? Are you kidding?

So, thank to ya'll I have now discovered the problem behind my dramatic loss of power that I have been dealing with for the last week.........The fricken pipe blew out of the boot.

yep

That's it. A new hose clamp ( because i guess it went cruisin' down the road) and I should be as good as new. Ya. I'm serious.

Thanks for everything. I was so dumbfounded and laughing so hard that I haven't actually put it back yet. But I'm sure that's the problem. (DUH??)

I'll keep helping others until I need help again. I know I'm new to this place, as far as posting, but I've been coming here for the last 2 years doing what I can. Carry on wayward son, there will be peace when you are done.

Nope, all paved roads. It was an entire week, not just a day. Ran it all day today highway and city and everything seems to be fine so far.

P.S. Thank you for serving our country. Much respect

I got the max energy a few months ago. My 7.3 loves the 60 hp setting. a little bit of turbo bark when i'm really on it. the 100hp setting was just too much without gauges. The wastegate pops on 60hp but i haven't noticed a drop in power.
