Just bought my first Ford pickup. Purchased a 2001 Ford F250 Powerstroke for the mileage booster compared to my 02 quad cab (new style) which only averaged 12.5 mpg. So far I'm really starting to like it but when I purchased it I noticed a considerable about of noise that sounded like exhaust. I was informed by the owner that it was a seal on the turbo but that once it warmed up the noise would lessen and/or disappear. Does anyone know what the average cost is to have this fixed by a shop. I'm a pretty handy mechanic as i've grown up on a farm and messed with a few diesel tear downs and rebuilds but is this something that is fairly easily fixed with the right kit?

There was no soot on the firewall. It sounds like a hissing exhaust leak until the motor has had a chance to warm up then it disappears. My dad was saying that it's a sealing ring inside the turbo that expands as it warms up.

That is the EBPV doing it's job. The truck has a valve on the exhaust side of the turbo that partially closes to assist in warming the engine. That is normal.

If it does it while driving, then you have a problem with the EBP sensor tube, sensor or EOT sensor. That is not normal.

Thanks for the help guzzle and i'll pay a little more attention tomorrow while i'm driving to see if i hear it at all while i'm driving after it's warmed up. I also want to say that you have a great site and I love the details on the mods. I especially like the details of how to check the glow plug solenoid. I will be checking mine as soon as i have the time. I believe my truck is a little too cold shouldered. I'll probably also look into your cvv rerouting mod.

If it only makes that noise when it is idling when warming then that is the EBPV. It is usually accompanied with a raise in idle and it shuts off and opens the valve as soon as you touch the brakes. It shouldn't work when in gear.
