I had to tow my buddy's '05 cummins over the hill from Grand junction to Colorado Springs. I could only run in second geargoing up the hills, and know that I should be able to do better than that.
Since we were taking it to a diesel shop in town, I figured it couldn't hurt to find out if their mech knew anything about anything. I started picking his brain, and they had a little time to hook it up to a scanner. I also got the opportunity to be involved in the testing process.

This is what we found:

P0476 epc no voltage signal
P0196 epr not funtioning
and the good one
P0281 Cyl. 7 contribution test failure

Other notes, we saw that the hpop was only pushing a little over 500 psi at an idle.

Possible conclusions:
bad o-rings on or near #7 injector
weak hpop
fouled #7 injector
could care less about the epc and epr at this time

Potential solutions:
Rebuild injectors
change injector o-rings again (did that 30K ago about a year...)
install hpop cross over line
replace hpop
diesel flush?

Anyone got any other ideas????? I'm tired of spending all of the money that I don't have chasing demons:wink2:

The 500 psi is normal
The # 7 cc test could be bad wire harness, loose poppet screw, bad injector.
When I get one that fails cc test I remove the valve cover and start it up and watch the oil spouts. All should spit oil at same rate. Also while running remove the wire to one injector at a time. If any does not make it rough that is suspect injecyor. Then it could be loose poppet screw or worn poppet valves or bad solenoid (rare)

Which shop in the Springs? I'm always looking for a decent diesel shop.

They are Springs auto & Truck service center. They are at 1015 Valley Street, and that is just east of Powers on Galley Their phone # is 719-382-0363, Talk to Devon, He is the owner. They seem reasonable, it onlly cost me $77 to get out of there yesterday, and about an hour and a half by the time it was said and done.

On another note, That is good to hear that 500 psi is normal, and as far as loose wiring, all injectors passed the buzz test, as well as every other electronic test. I think next time I get a chance to look at it, I will at least get a valve cover off and see what kind of oil spurts out of them, and probably will pull the #7 and see what the o-rings look like on it.

By the way, can anyone tell me which bank the #7 will be on, or point me to a diagram or something somewhere?

Ya, I know Devon but prefer to work with his dad, Terry. Thanks for the reply.

well I finally got up the ambition to go out in the cold and pull off odd side valve cover and start messing with stupid thing. I am getting the same size shot of oil from each injector, at least 1-3-5-7. I unplugged each electrical plug, one by one, and the change that each one made got less and less as I went from 1 to 7. And #7, even though it failed a contribution test two days ago, there was still a noticeble change in the sound of the engine when I unplugged it. I as of yet, have not pulled any of them out to check the o-rings, but I did check them all for any play, and there was nothing to be found loose.
I think before I tie into that, I am going to pull the even bank cover off and do the same investigation that I have done thus far, and at least be able to compare the two banks. maybe if both sides act exactly the same, it might help somebody point me in the right direction.

upon investigation of the even bank, I have found that no two injectors react the same way when unplugged. some change the idle drastically some just a little bit, and #6, doen't change a thing. It sounds to me maybe like it is time to rebuild my injectors, or could there be faulty feedback from the idm?

Or, what about this injector flush that I keep hearing about from some, and others seem to never have heard of it. Can anyone tell me what kind of sovent they use to clean out all the injectors?
