First of all, Welcome to TheDieselStop.com!
The 7.3 will fit.
Externally, the 7.3 is dimensionally identical to the 6.9 that Ford installed in '83-'87 F-series trucks.
If you're repowering a gasser, you will also need a transmission that fits the 6.9/7.3 engine. And the wiring harness for the diesel. And another battery..

What engine are you replacing? A gas to diesel conversion is a little more complicated than a 6.9 to 7.3 swap. This is the place to find those that have done both.

The thread title seems to indicate it has a 6.9L. The engines do interchange pretty easily, as they use the same engine blocks. Depending on the years, the glow plug harness may be different, also I think the flywheels / flexplates are different.

Yes, a 7.3 IDI will drop right into the 6.9's old home. If you have an '86 6.9, you will either have to get the "newer" 7.3 IDI glow plug harness, or you can remove the 7.3 glow plugs and put in new Beru/Motorcraft 6.9 glow plugs and use the 6.9 system. This is what I have done with my project truck. Now, putting in a 7.3 powerstroke is a whole other story. Sure you could do it, but it will be a huge electrical nightmare, plus the IDI's and PSD's are different breeds and will require more work to get PSD into your '86. What tranny are you going to use?
