It sounds like you're on the right track. Don't run it very long on the elictric pump unless you bypass the mechaical pump, because the diaphragm in the mechaical one might be broke and supplyig your crankcase with diesel.

Check your glow plugs. After overnight sitting, and before any attempts to start They should read about .2 ohms.

I unhooked the temp. wire on mine, so it starts like it is a cold engine all the time. It is just a long start that warns me. I have found from 1 to as may as 3 out. I bought the truck with 3 of them not workig, they were cheapos, so far I have replaced 6 of them. I might just go ahead and bite the bullet, and replace the other two before cold weather hits.

For new connectors once in desperation, I used the 16-14GA. butt splice connector. Just cut the excess isulation off of one end, and plug that end onto the glow plug. Worked so well, I use that all the time now. As for the resistance, 0 ohms can mean that the glow plug is shorted. At that point I hook it up outside the engine, and watch how it heats up.

The glow plug grounds through its body, so it has to be touchig groud. I usually hook of piece of wire to the connector, and batt+ the touch the plug to the batt-. Hold it with a pair of pliers it gets a little warm. If it turns red all the way down, it's good. If it's only part way down it's shorted.
