I'm just told that our family ranch has purchased a "new" truck for use around the property. It's an 89 F-350, regular cab 2wd with the 7.3 engine and manual transmission. Not sure how many miles, but it it apparently in decent shape with a new set of tires and was purchased for a song.

Now that we have it, is there anything we need to look for before using it? The guy that bought it for the ranch said he heard that with the new diesel fuel, we should add some transmission fluid to each fill-up. Is this true?

Overall, is this a good engine?

Anything we need to watch for?

People have used tranny fluid, 2 stroke oil, and also your standard diesel fuel additives to the fuel. I use an additive with Lubricating properties on ever fill.

Another thing to look at is the rad fluid. Find out from the previous owner if he ever maintained the SCA's in the coolant. The 7.3 is known to have cavitation issues associated with thinner cylinder walls and bad coolant.

How many miles are on the truck.

P.S. to new users. Fill out your signature in the "my account" section with year make and model of your truck so we know what your talking about. See below
