Was it an improvement and would your trade your pre-power stroke for one?

My '94 IDI with the upgraded ATS turbo parts has the same HP/torque as a '94 PSD so no I wouldn't.

I have thought about a 6.0 if I could get it cheap enough to do the mods. Problem is I have a crew cab long bed dually for towing my fiver, and will only tow with that configuration.

Chuck I hear that the new 6.7(?) is pretty good too, but They are WAY out of my price range. Must be why I drive a 13 year old truck, and a 30 year old car.

6.7 is more $$ than my first house. Payments would be more than my current mortgage payment.

When a customer rolls in with a '16 F450 to pick up his new 43' triple axle toy hauler, I just shake my head.

I believe all the 94 Powerstrokes were manual, where the IDI most were automatic.Going to the manual would be worth the upgrade if nothing else. Glow plug reliability much better on the powerstroke vs the IDI. Quite a few upgrades on the Powerstroke but the manual transmission first and foremost for those that made the mistake most made and going E4OD.

The 7.3 IDI has a very reliable glow plug system. If you look at the towing ratings the auto tranny is rated higher. I am old enough to be done with shifting but to each his own. I yanked 12,000 pounds of fifth wheel across the USA in '09 (8511 miles) and my E4OD is good as gold.

I got rid of my 89 IDI with a 5sp manual in favor of a 1997 F350 powersroke. Both I bought new. I got tired of replacing glowplugs in 8 degree weather every winter, but maybe just my bad luck, but anyway went in to buy the new 1997 and of course wanted the ZF5, as who in the world wants an automatic in a truck? They told me all allotments of trucks had shipped and no way in the world to get the manual, and in fact none available anywhere at any dealer whithin 1000 miles, so against my better judgement I bought the 97. What a great truck vs the 89 except that stupid transmission which is beyond stupid, there has to be a stupider word for stupid. Well 2 weeks after I bought this thing I see the same exact truck, color and all sitting on a dealer lot 1 mile from my house with the ZF5. Just to satisfy my mind wondering why my new 1997 was so stupid, I drove the ZF5. Oh my gosh, what a truck. Oh well I bought a lemon, but it's still running and been fabulous, other than that one fatal mistake, that stupid, stupid transmission. Live and learn. My E4OD sat at the dealer with 7000 miles on it for one entire month for transmission failure and most I tow is nothing, just stock truck.
I went to the national drag races in Epping, NH, and Englishtown, NJ that year, and back in 1997 there was nil on E4OD tow vehicals. Every F250/350 tow had the ZF5. They were smarter than I was and knew the obvious and refused to buy the E4OD.

Yep, I looked in my maintenance book and my last set of glow plugs lasted 11 years and 80,000 miles. Even then they were all working fine but winter was coming on so I figured it was time to change them.

On the glow plugs, anyone that installed the Champion or Autolite GP's because they are CHEAP is in for a surprise. Burn out, swelling, tips burn off, short life and anything else you can think of. Motorcraft/Beru ZD9 is the only one to use. If those burn out often, then there is something wrong with the controller or your timing is way off.

It's not the E4OD, it's the Dealer. Probably didn't have any tranny guy worth a damn. Millions of E4OD's on the road from 89 to 97. Most common problem is not with the tranny, but with the Tach or VSS.

So, what was the diagnosis with your's?
