i have a 94 f350 IDI turbo crewcab dually.

It starts up fine with no problem. However when i shut if off to go inside a store or somewhere. (about 30 45mins) I come back out and it wont start.
i have checked the schraeder valve and no to little fuel comes out. i cranked it for 15 seconds and nothing. i let it cool down (couple hours) starts up fine..
also a couple times while driving when i have let go of the throttle it died but always started back up. no warning no stuttering nothing just dies.

When i shut the truck down and start it back up starts up fine even after 3 or 5 mins

any help would be great. this is my daily drive.

now i just let it run with the doors locked when i go in somewhere...

let me know if you have any suggestions....

First question is what engine do you have?

In 1994 there were two turbo diesels.

7.3L IDI factory turbo available with auto or manual tranny

7.3L DI (first generation Power Stroke) was introduced mid year 1994 but was only available with a manual transmission. Both were badged TURBODIESEL on the fenders, the Power Stroke fender badges did not come out until 1995.

Can you tell us which you have?

The answers so far pertain to Power Strokes. I will move to the IDI forum so you can get information from folks who deal with the IDI. I have also removed the replies specific to the Power Stroke.

sorry........

would low oil cause this??
No problem neighbor (Goshen resident here, about 10 miles outside the loop east northeast). I have never worked on an IDI - give folks a bit of time and you will get what you need, I am sure.

it kinda sounds like your injection pump is gettin weak. try carrying a bottle or two of water just room temp or (inside truck temp) and when your truck acts up as in when you go inside the store and come back out it wont start---pour water on your IP (you dont want it to be cold as you could crack the pump) once you pour the water on ur IP try starting your truck a couple times. if it starts using this method you more than likely have a weak IP. ---------------im in this situation currently and carry two or three bottles of water with me : )

If you have done the cool water restart trick with good results, then yes now is the time for an IP replacement. There is info in my photo link that may help you with the IP R&R.

Do check the fuel pump pressure to be certain your getting all you need there too...

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.
