quick question, could I put a different pcm in my truck from the same year as my truck? It's a 96 f-350 powerstroke 7.3 4wd

No, if you have a automatic in your truck it needs to be a PCM for a automatic.

For a automatic you want the PCM to be in the DPC-202 family and for a manual a PCM in the DPC-203 family

Straight across swap Bugman is on point. Now if you can’t find one (auto PCM) you can get a manual PCM and have it programmed with Hydra Tuner and add tunes for an auto, which will overwrite stock ZF tune. Just a suggestion.
