have a 96 international 7.3 444e. drive it about on quarter mile and it pings and looses power and then quits. hard to restart. acts like it is getting no fuel. just got this truck to make a rv puller out of. went to napa and got a fuel filter. is there a special wrench to unscrew the top of filter housing off? tried a round peice of rebarb and a screwdriver and broke plastic tabs off top of cap, got it to turn about one eighth of inch. got a new cap also $25. also is there a small filter in back of the filter housing. does anyone have the number of this small filter? hope this cures my problem and is not the pump! any ideas!

It could be the fuel pump since that sounds like the same symptoms mine had when the high pressure side of my pump went south (they are two-stage pumps that run about $80 at AutoZone or other FLAPS). As far as the other filter you mentioned, the IH version may be different than the Ford version in this regard (so someone chime in on that). Cheers!

They recommend using a screw driver or something similar. Maybe you could use an oil filter wrench to grab just the lid and twist it off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif Sounds like it's on there pretty tight though. I would be very careful.
