I have a 96 Power Stroke with 220,000mi that will get really doggy when pulling a hill. I’m not talking about big hills; I’m talking about Kansas’s hills. I pull a boat that weighs less than 5000 lbs. and a camper that weighs 8000-9000 lbs. as soon as I get to a small hill it starts bogging down if I haven't dropped out of od yet it makes me. Then the rpm's jump up and it's almost worse. If it seams to do better if I get it up to a faster speed 75mph 2200-2400 rpm but much over or under, and it seems to lose torke. I have changed the air filter, and fuel filter. The fuel pressure is at 70psi. It doesn’t smoke accept a little at startup. Cold starts good, hot start's good. Any ideas where to start would be great. It also only gets about 14MPG unloaded and probably 10-12 loaded.

I have looked through the archives but everything I have found is a little different. Thanks

i would invest in some guages and check your boost levels....also opening up the exhaust and intake will help out TONS...especially in situations like pulling up hills

Yes, I know gauges are needed, but I don't think it is running right stock, so I didn’t want to add aftermarket (intake and exhaust) parts until I figure out what is wrong. I was just wondering what would cause the list of problems. (Plugged cat, that butterfly valve on the turbo).

Has any body ever had a plugged cat? Is the cat delete legal in Missouri??

Could a bad cam positioning sensor cause low fuel mileage, and power, with no stalls, no smoke, easy start, and clean idol? Is the 96 cam poisoning sensor one that people were having problems with?

I'm trying to eliminate the less expensive solutions. This truck is not a daily driver; I only use it on the weekends to pull stuff. I really don't want to through to much money into it as I need to start saving for a tranny. It runs fine now, but it has 220000 on the e40d and it's only a matter of time, and yes the first thing I did was change the fluid and filter

Clem, I was writing my post as you were posting yours. That is the kind of solution I'm looking for, a cheap likely place to start. If the odds are good that is the problem. There is going to be a dead kitty in my truck.

Just disconnect the cat at the down pipe and take a test ride.

I concur, it's not near as loud as you would think. My cat plugged at around 140,000 and I had a couple friends have it plug at around 120,000. Unplug the EBPV also and see if you can force it to open a little more.

Personally, I would plan to do an exhaust and intake regardless. Put a pillow case over your head during a heat wave and see how well you can breath while running. This is what the stock air and exhaust does to the PSD on OBS trucks.

I dont recall if you mentioned this as I am typing but how long have you had the truck and what gear ratio do you have. It helps us a lot when asked questions if you put your trucks particulars and mods in your sig.

One other thing, run some Lucas or BG44K fuel treatment through it, these 2 products are not snake oil and I think you'll be surprised at what happens.

I have only had the truck for a few months. Got it to pull a camper with. As far as 4.10 or 3.55 gears I'm not for sure. I would think 4.10 2100 rpm is about 65 mph in OD. Is there an easy way to tell?

I have to do new ball joints, and loose the auto locking hubs before I can worry about the intake and exhaust.

I also have a 95 psd 4door bronco. Runs like a striped assed ape. The only thing I have done to it is an afe intake as the stock was recalled and had not been replaced. The tranny blew on it last year. $$$$$$$$$.

I'm just getting the fuel filter housing put back on the 95 after the fuel heater bimetal switch thing decided to melt and let diesel leak out of the housing.

You might try cleaning your FPR screen too.

Could be a bad MAP sensor, unplug the electrical conector and see if it runs any better. Caution CEL will be on and shifting may be harsh if Auto.

Good Luck, Jeff

Check your exhaust sytem pre-turbo, if a powerstroke seems to run worse up in the rpms I bet you have a turbo leak, before or after I don't know, but preturbo leaks are easy to find, just look for soot.

You should check your tag on the rear end a see what you have. If its 355 and your other one is 410 your comparing apples and oranges.

Remove that plastic cover on the top of the engine. Do this when the engine is OFF and cool. Take your hands and feel the little orange hoses [2] and see if one of them is split. The hoses are the ones after the turbo and just before the intake manifolds just above the valley. You might be loosing boost pressure there. Just a thought. I had a wear spot on the hose that went to the map sensor. This was giving my engine computer a false reading.
