Just replaced oil cooler seals and flushed the coolant system. I am towning 9k lbs and 50 miles in the temp jumped from 195 to 260 in a matter of seconds. Any ideas? I'm sitting on the side of the road trying to come up with a plan

Thermostat issue? Did you replace it when you did the flush, may be bad or wrong one.

Maybe didn't get all the air out of the system and got a pocket trapped in the back of the engine. Once it boils - even in one area - it quickly displaces coolant and heats up quick.

Denny may be on to something if you pulled your thermostat - especially if you replaced it with a short stem version instead of the correct long stem thermostat.

Yeah, i forget to add that I added the thermostat when I flushed the coolant system, there was not one in it when I started. I went with the motorcraft recommended thermostat (195 degrees) and probably put 20 miles on it since then just to get it circulating. I recently bought the truck which had a ton of oil in the coolant reservoir. That is why I replaced the oil cooler seals, flushed the coolant system and installeded the thermostat. I just found it weird that it was towing fine up and down hills at a constant 195 degrees and then suddenly, within 5 seconds it was at 260. I shut it down fast, got towed home and now I guess I'll look for leaks and anything obvious. If it were a clogged radiator or bad water pump, wouldn't i see the temp climb slowly?

What was the part number on the thermostat? If it was a short stem which fit the 94-97 models it would cause the issue you are having. That thermostat prevents flow to the rear of the engine.

The consesus is that it must have had an air pocket somewhere so I gave it another thorough flush today AND (sarcasm) did you know that you shouldn't use the normal green O'reilly's antifreeze. Well I learned that today while doing some research. So Ole Reliable(more sarcasm) is now full of 50/50 mix of Rotella ELC and distilled water. I drove it enough to get 195 degrees and build pressure. I think I'll drive it as a daily driver for a week or so before I attempt to pull the camper to the deer lease again. Thanks for the help and education guys.

Yeah, the green can cause problems. It'll eat the glue that holds and seals the injector cups and the you're really in a pickle.
