I have an earlier 99, production date 7/98. And I can't seem to figure out why my truck has the stuff it has. Th updated airbox vented out the front, correct? It has that one, not the fender well intake. The HP rating on the valve cover is 250hp, not 215, 225, 235 like some, and I thought that wasn't available until late 2000. And If someone can help, how do I know which turbo is on my truck? It will be replaced soon soo I think I might need to know.

The airbox may have been changed out if the truck was in for a driveablility problem. There was a TSB on it, that is why mine was the later model when I bought my early 99. Ignore the rating on the valve cover, that number only applies to the engine in International trucks, Ford modifies the PCM programming, and it does not have to comply with the engine sticker.

As for the turbo, it is most likely the early 99. If you do not have the AIH in the manifold Y-pipe, you have an early 99. The Y-pipe will not interchange between early & late 99 turbo's. Also, to upgrade to the late model turbo, there are many other parts that have to be changed out, approx $800 for all the parts.

Its real simple. Early 99's had 4 bolts around the compressor housing and 99 1/2 and newer had 5 bolts around the compressor housing. The IAH is a dead give away but if you are not familiar with what the IAH is the bolts are a simple solution.

Gonna look at my turbo tomorrow and double check the bolts.

That being said I think I have the oldest 99 in this forum?

the sticker is the rating of the engine on a hydraulic dyno with no accesories attatched. with the early 99 until the power was raised the actual power of the engine dropped to 235hp when it was in the truck with all the accesories bolted to it (Huge Fan).

makes an electric fan look real attractive doesn't it?

My trucks production date is 7/98(early 99). It does have the AIH on the y-pipe also. I'll have to check the bolts on the turbo. And how does that explain th e valve covers I have seen with 235HP, 225HP, and 215HP ratings? I know the 215 is from REAL early '99's that still had the non-intercooled PSD in it. It was like they attached the new body to the old engine and chassis.

Interesting, I have never heard of a diesel SD without an intercooled engine. Maybe a chassis test bed prototype that was crushed or some offbeat Mexican Federale special, are you sure about this?

I think your early 99 does not have the intake air heater. What you're seeing is a vacuum switch and tubing. The IAH looks like electrical terminals wired into the pipes, like a toaster oven ordeal.
