How did the A/C compressor go out. If it shelled out and sent metal throughout the system, you are looking at replacing a lot of parts and flushing the system. If it did not send out metal, you can replace the compressor and receiver/drier yourself, and possibly the orifice tube if it is not stuck. It does not sound like you have experience with HVAC, so I doubt you have the tools to pull a vac, leak test, and recharge the system with the proper amount of oil & refrigerent. If you can replace the parts, you can then bring it to a shop that can recharge the system.
big_blue, you do not need an IMACA license or the like to handle the R134a refrigerent, however, I have been hearing rumors for the past couple years that they may start requiring a license for purchase/use of R134a.
