I went to use my oxy/acet set this morning to heat some thick steel for bending and the Acetylene bottle valve on the top won't turn. I have sprayed PB blaster and then used vise grips and LIGHTLY taped on the top of the valve and nada, zip,ziltch...What's the next step?

This set is stored out in the back yard in a shed but I haven't seen any moisture on the inside roof. I don't use this set too often as I have a mig for most of my work.

Just use a little caucasian persuasion...

I have

I have used "good ol boy" persuasion too , I'm just not in the mood to blow up or go to the moon today, I want to get the air bags that have sitting in the box for a year installed before we take the trailer out next week, and today it's NOT raining and I DON'T have to work on some one else's stuff

is it possible that the valve is already in the full open position, and won't turn anymore? Did you open your torch valves to check? I'm not trying to be a smart-a$$, but I have had similar things happen to me.

It's fixed now..When I put the set away I make sure to close the tanks and bleed off all the air/acet at the torch and then close the valves at the torch...Thanks for askin

BTW tank shows 150 PSI/1000kPa

poof-- boom

there is a rule when working with fuel gas.... DO NOT USE OIL OR GREASE on ANY of the parts. I would go to the supply house and swap the tank. I would not play with a fuel gas valve or regulator. They are cheap but you only get 1 chance at trying for the darwin award.:nono:

I'm not disagreeing with Scottb, but the concern with oil and oxy/acetylene welders is the potential interaction between the oil and the oxygen. I suppose if you had oil on the acetylene valve and it blew through the hoses to the mixing valve, you could have a problem...but has anyone heard of an adverse reaction between acetylene and oil?

I totaly understand the reasons why you don't use oil with OXYGEN. I will admit after thinking it over I may have goofed. I did use brake cleaner on the valve top after removing the valve "cap". I know the valve is threaded so it wouldn't blow out. then I "vented" the tank W/O the regulator hooked up and held a clean rag and it was DRY. When the torch is on (lit) there is a positive pressure at the torch and I ALWAYS turn off the oxygen first.

I thought you were supposed to turn off the acetylene first, then the oxygen.

ALWAYS shut off the fuelgas first--so you dont get torch blowback---it can even happen with the antiblowback valves--tho minor--

I guess I'll have to admit to another brain .... I am DONE with the project but I will now remember to shut off the GAS first and OXY last.
Since I am typing you can tell I didn't make any trips to outerspace . I had pretty much forgotten about the oxy/acet set up since I got MIG a few yrs. back. Thanks for all the info
