I'm looking at a 97 power stroke extended cab with 100,600 miles, one owner, very clean, no body rust-a little on the underside, it needs a tailgate, has a nice topper, everything works, 3:55 rear end and automatic tranny. It's being sold by a dealership and they want 13,900 for it. My last offer was 13,500. I talked to the original owner. He is a 71 year old who drove the truck like an old man. However he used it as a car, so it has never had much in the back except a slide in camper a few times. He also pulled a light boat with it. It has never had glow plugs put in it, and it has the original batteries. The truck is very clean and has very, very few rock chips on it. It is a nice truck. The stealership won't budge off of 13,900 and Im holding at 13,500. It will cost about 700 for a tail gate and paint job for it. I live in the midwest and I just feel like this is too much to pay for a 10 year old truck. I want to know what you guys think. What are you paying in your area for a truck like this?
As you can see I am driving a power stroke and I love it.

Yes, I read your post. That is what caused me to ask my question about prices. I'm glad you responded here because you reminded me that I didn't mention that the one I'm looking at is an extended cab. I think I'll edit my post.

I live in N.E. MO. In Feb. of 05 I bought a 96 f250, ext cab, 4x4, one owner, super straight truck. It then had 156,000 miles on it. I went to look at it in Carthage IL at the ford dealer. They had had the truck since early Oct. of 04. They had come down to a asking price of $10,900, the salesman asked me to make an offer he could take to the boss. He heard me tell my wife I was thinking about $8000. He said is that an offer? I agreed and ended up buying the truck for eight grand. A great deal for me because it had been on their lot for so long. I think you can get a better price on a truck than the one you have mentioned

I paid 13,000 for mine 97ext cab, 5speed, 117,000mi, no rust/dents and very good paint. Already had brand new 4in lift/wheels/tires, straightpipe, and superchip. I would say 13,900 sounds a little high.

It all depends on you and the truck. My 97 has 102,000 and I would definitlty would not part with it for under 15,000.

What is the Kelly blue book on it for your area?
I just put it in as a loaded 4x4 for my zip code here in CO and it was 13,665 in mint condition and trade in was 8900. That was with the topper added in.

You know they did not give that guy more than trade in value.
And if it is pretty clean they did not do anything to it but clean it and detail it.

Did the original owner rebuild the tranny? Did he have the front end rebuilt? Is it a 4x4? Those are the big 2 questions there. The other important question is the enigne sound?

If you really want it then I would negotiate for a lower price if your area has a similar KBB value. And then I would make the sale contingent on an inspection by the best independant diesel shop in town which would include a compression test or a leak down test.

The glow plugs will prbably need to be done soon, and the batteries too. Neither last forever. Tranny maybe great for another 50 to 100K miles or it may crap itself in 5k miles just another cost to consider. If you have to pay premium price for the truck make sure you get a premium truck.

Thanks for responding. I guess I forgot to mention that it is a 4x4. After hearing from you guys, I think the deal is off. The book value is about 13,500. The only thing about the truck that gives me cause for concern is that the old guy drove it back and forth to work and he only worked about six blocks from home. My son tells me that that is considered extreme duty. Very hard on em! thanks!

depends if you are scared of miles, or if you want a rig with no dents/scratches etc. I just wanted a truck to haul loads around and pull my SCCA car and jeep, so I found a high mileage 4x4 that fit perfect. Saved me huge over a low mileage rig and since I fix most of the small problems myself, it hasn't bit me in the ass yet (knock on wood).

I'm also glad I bought a truck that already had "beauty marks" so now I don't feel bad when I add more to it.

As for price, right now I'm looking at a 01 F350 ext cab 4x4 134K miles PSD at a dealer for $14,500

You guys need to check up north. One of my customers just bought a 00 F250 ext cab loaded with the 7.3 for 12,500 at an auto auction. Nice truck. This was in Edmonton Alberta by the way. He didn't steal it. That was the going price for a lot of them that day. 04 Dodges with hemis were 9500-11,500.

Bountyhunter;

Was the auction he went to at www.michenerallen.com?

I've been there a few times over the years. The only problem with the trucks from the oil fields, is they really get used, hard! I didn't mind the prices i've seen there, but you don't get the chance to drive the truck at all, and they stay locked up until sale morning. Michener Allan's own drivers run them through the line, and they will oblige you a little, such as revving the engine up to hear how it sounds, and rowing through the gears to see how long it takes to shift. They don't get the trucks up to speed in the line up, since there isn't any room to do it, the sales i attended had 1500+ vehicles sold in a day.

Not saying there are not deals to be found there, almost all the used car dealers around me get their stock from there. That's why i went to look. If they can buy there, haul them 1200 miles, and then sell them again, surely it's not hard to get a deal. Anyway, happened to find what i wanted in Minnesota before i went again.

Acutally it was Osman Auction. Same church different pew. I went and "held his hand" during the sale. The truck was sitting there idling so I got to check it out a little bit. They put the keys in a whole line at a time. I picked up my 97 F350 powerstroke at Michner two years ago for 4000 knowing i had to do the engine. Sure beats my 460 at pulling my modified tractor.
