My friend's F350 made a loud bang, lost boost & started pouring white smoke last night. He made it home but said he had to be really careful to keep EGT's under control after this happened. I thought I would find an intercooler hose blown off but they are all still attached. I did not remove them to inspect them for cracks or holes but did pull the intake tube between the mass airflow sensor & turbo to check that the turbo shaft is free. It turns freely by hand. Could he have blown an intercooler or simply cracked a CIC hose that I missed? I did idle the truck & brake torqued it briefly in drive while listening for anything that would indicate an air leak but couldn't hear anything except some turbo whine, less turbo noise than I expected. Possible stuck vanes on the turbo?

It is still under warranty but it would be so much easier & convenient to get the truck moving again without putting it on a flatbed.

Advice would be appreciated.

Thanks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

EBP (Exhaust back pressure sensor) go bad on this thing often. There is an TSB on this along with a TSB for the electrical connection to the EBP.

This is just a shot in the dark on my part but 2004s are known for this. I have first hand experience. When it happened to me I thought I disintegrated my turbo. Symtoms were dramatic.

If its the EBP it will be under warranty and there is a newly designed EBP that replaces the older style.

Thanks for the reply. I guess its time to flatbed it to the dealer. (He's got a pretty gnarly driveway & we were trying to avoid towing it. I'll pull it out with my truck to the road.)
