2000 7.3L 4x4, used primarily for towing a horse trailer w/ approx 170k miles. Some times during the year this will have a Lance Camper on it AND tow the trailer.

Will be proactively swapping the trans for the HD model, larger cooler. Haven't had significant problems but don't want to get stuck and hear that's the way to go. We purchased the truck used with about 115k miles on it 10 years ago, so we don't put a lot of miles on it. Previous owner used it for hauling as well, so that has been its life pretty much.

Would like to get gauges setup to monitor temps better, but for the price of a gauge pod it seems that a tuner can cover most of the gauges and provide some extra capabilities?

Wanted to try and confirm this, I know that there will likely be many opinions on this but I'm willing to listen to folks that have been through this.

Gauge Pod or Tuner?

If gauge pod, what do you recommend (including which gauges within the pod)?

If Tuner, which one, and would any additional gauge still be recommended?

Not looking for hot rodding, just good solid safe hauling, including hills and back road trails (hauling in horses to ride). Mostly driven by my wife who probably won't touch it, but I do like the idea of having some better "alarms" for her if things are getting hot, etc...

Thanks!

Trans temp, EGT and boost maybe, assuming it is tuned. Stock tune doesn't really need gages because it is so mild. Larger cooler should keep trans temps safe also.

I have the DP-Tuner. The difference between stock and the tow tunes is incredible. The only downside is the constant grin you'll be wearing. I agree with every modification 69Mach suggested, but of everything I've done to my truck, the DP-Tuner is the one I'd fight to the death if someone tried to take it away.

Amen to what RT said. I chose the DP-Tuner with the Infinity option. It gives many more engine functions available to monitor while towing and hauling compared to guages.

The downside is that tuning changes cannot be made on the fly with a tuner.

You will not find a nicer, more knowledgeable and accommodating person than Jody Tiptoe, Owner of DP-Tuner.

I'd say go with an edge cs monitor and ts or hydra chip.

Fixed Jody's name for ya  . Thanks for the kind words, BTW!

Yes, running the Infinity alone does not let you switch tunes on the fly. It is a programmer and not a chip, so the engine has to be turned off every time you want to switch tunes. However, you can run a chip in combination with the Infinity to give you the monitoring/diagnostics capabilities of the touchscreen and the switch-on-the-fly capabilities of the chip. Me personally, I just run the Infinity by itself. I used to use a chip as well, but I do not switch tunes that often, and when I do I usually have a minute or two to spare for the tune to load.

this is just my 2 cents

For what I understand of your need (might be off) the infinity from DP with tune would be the best. this would put you just under/around 1K, if you want to be able to switch tune on the fly and have more money to spend, add the chip than your looking at around $1500-$1800

gauges and hydra is also a good option that will do what you are looking for with switch on the fly this will bring you less than 1K

The scangauge2 might be another option to

If I did mistake the prices pls correct me
