Looking for some ideas/options for adding an engine oil cooler. My oil temps are getting way up there and I need to come up with something.
Anybody have one, or make one for themselves?
Thanks.

look on ebay under nascar, oil coolers, use a big ass one with an-12 fittings on it, i have one sitting here that i am going to use under the IC as a tranny cooler, 26"x5"x5", mount it under teh rad, will hold about 3-4 quarts of oil.

Jim, get ahold of Nit, I think he was cooking something up with an oil cooler off a race car or something. Haven't seen him post in awhile, so not sure what status of it is.

I have toyed with adding one after the bypass filter, but, I doubt there's enough flow there to do any good.

I just don't see where you'd get the flow from, and send it back to, without starving the motor for oil. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

The "after bypass" cooler don't have to hold much pressure. Otherwise, I've seen 100 PSI at WOT on a good cold morning; and the cooler would have to withstand that.

Jim,
When you say way up there, what are they reaching?
I have only seen my oil temp match my engine water temp once while towing in 90 plus deg temps. Normally it runs 10-15 deg cooler than the water.

Rick, with a 200* stat, the oil temp sails past 200 when getting on it. This is due to my Frankenstein HPOP I built. I need to get oil temps alot lower, because, as others with the Swamp pump have posted, NO start when hot. Let her cool for 1/2 hour or so and fires right up. It's getting pretty annoying having to let it idle for a couple hours at the track. Then, she shut off on me at the end of track and I had to get towed to the pits where I waited for it to cool down. I need temps to be down around 130 or so to start.
I think I need the cooler to go after my IPR dump and HPOP feed, then to the HPOP res. Should be plenty of pressure there to do this.

Also, do you think running a thicker oil will keep temps down? I don't care about cold starts.

Thanks for the input, I'll see what I can come up with.

So where do you think the oil is picking up the extra heat? From the friction in the HPOP? What about dropping stat back to 192?
Would be intersting to know what the oil temp is going into the HPOP and what it is coming out of it.

Gotta have the 203 stat. I'd go hotter if they made one.
I know the pump compressing the oil is what's building the heat. Basic fluid dynamics, or whatever.

Get this, at idle, engine temp reading around 185 (cooled a little) the oil temp was reading 195 or so. I turn the fans on the radiator and the oil temp drops to 170-175 in a minute or so and the engine temp stays around 185.

So I know adding a cooler, maybe with a fan, will bring the temps right down.
