Does the 7.3IDI have a clutch on the alternator like some of the newer diesels do? I have a lot of belt vibration at idle.

Nope, and the belt vibration is normal. Don't try to get rid of it by overtightening, it's hard on the alt. bearings.

By a lot, I'm saying an inch to inch and a half deflection. The belt looks like it has rubbed somewhere. I tightened the alternator some. Now it is down to 1/2 in. to 1 in. deflection.

They DO vibrate a lot but I just adjust them normally and go on with life. I've always got over 50,000 miles out of good quality Goodyear belts.

I'm thinking I remember a thread where someone installed an idler pulley for the long belt to keep deflection to a minimum.

Didn't pay too much attention as I run a serpentine belt.

Yeah there's a dual idler available.
