In the past I have read a few posts about Amsoil in the 7.3. Some have been good and some have been bad. I have used many different oils in my truck ranging from Rotella dino, Rotella syn, Delo, and CenPeCo. All analysis have come back great. I was thinking of buying some Amsoil from my neighbor and running it for a year. I only do about 10k per year anymore. I also run the fleetguard stratapore with synthetic media.

I looked at the diesel 5W30 and 15W40 Amsoil.

I know our injectors are hard on oil and I thought I read something about ithe Amsoil shearing pretty bad. Does anybody have good first hand experience or any links to old posts that sum up the details?

Any advise would be super!

If you change your oil as often as Ford requires to maintain your engine warranty, then synthetic oil is not cost effective.

But if you want to waste money, then it's as good as any dino oil.

Amsoil makes diesel-rated motor in serveral viscosities, including 15w40, 5w40, 10w30, and 5w30.

Ford doesn't mention synthetic oil, but for dino they say you should run 15w40 when the low temp for the day will be above freezing, and 10w30 or 5w30 when the high temp for the day will be below freezing. Since dino oil doesn't come in 5w40, Ford doesn't mention that viscosity.

If I wanted to waste money on synthetic oil, I'd run 5w40 year 'round.

I tried it once. I changed to Amsoil 15w40, then did a modified version of an extended drain. 3,500 miles, then changed the filter and topped of with two quarts of oil, then drove another 3,500 miles. Blackstone oil analysis had told me earlier that my oil change interval was 5,500 miles - because of my unique engine and driving requirements. When I sent them the sample of Amsoil with 7,000 miles on it they were not happy. They told me that my OCI was 5,500 miles, and that running that high-priced oil longer than 5,500 miles caused increased wear on my engine.

So I run dino Shell Rotella T and change it every 5,000 to 5,500 miles. I don't live where the low temps get below zero F., so I run 15w40 year 'round. Over 177,000 miles and 9.5 years so far, and it still runs like a new one.

I am also an Amsoil dealer, and have always had good luck with it, but have not run it long enough in my 7.3 to give you a first hand. I ran it the whole 4 1/2 years in my old 6.9L
Here's a link for your amsoil:
AMSOIL - Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil (HDD)

I am about to change mine to the series 3000 5W30 in the next couple of days. Make sure that you have him get you some engine flush when you make the change, it will give you a better place to start with.

I would be running amsoil in it right now, but I took my turbo off in october, and didn't get the o-rings back in right, so with about 8,000 miles on my amsoil, I gaver her an instant dumping and have been running mystic JT-8 since.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, the info is great. Thanks for the story smokey. After doing some real searches, I think synthetics have their advantages. I currently am running synthetic rotella simply for cold startups. The truck really appreciates it when it is -10 and I forget to plug it in. AFter reading some of the horror stories of Amsoil oil analysis, I think I will lean some other direction if I stick with it long term. I would like to hear from some royal purple users and their analysis.

I am happy with my CenPeCo in the summer. My analysis are great and they recommend me running longer than 5000 miles. Oil is cheap compared to an engine so I will stick to my 5k if dino oil. Would probably go 7,500 if syn.

Again, thanks for the posts guys. I know Amsoil has a guarantee, but I have a hard time believing they will a motor that has 178k miles on it like mine if a problem occurs.

Look forward to some royal purple posts!

Thanks for the honesty butch. I really can't understand how a "engineered" oil can be worse than a petroleum based stock oil. You'd think that it would be much better, but thats what I get for thinking. Think I will stick to my guns and use the syn for the winter and back to CenPeCo for the summer.

Thanks for all the input guys!

While I run Amsoil, and have for a long time, I think that the key issue is filtration. I like my Amsoil, but frankly, I'd probably be better off with a nice bypass filtration system on my truck and simply running Rotella. Why I don't take my own advice...well, I don't know. I'm lazy and "cheap," I guess.

I definitely noticed a difference in my transmission and rear differential when I switched to Amsoil. In my rear diff, my limited slip actually started to work!!!

They make good products, but are definitely more expensive. Just make sure whatever you're doing is filtered well, and oil analysis isn't a bad idea every once in awhile.

I have ran amsoil in many vehicle for about 10 years and no problems. I am currently running it in a 03 6.0, 91 7.3 w/banks turbo, 97 explorer 5.0, 1964 jd 1010. the only side effect that I am experiencing is the extra money in the wallet and less time changing oil.

I have a 2003 Excursion with a 7.3 with 92,000 mi. I watched a demonstration with Royal purple, and I thought I would try it. I live in Michigan so the winters can get chilly. Last fall before packed up the wife and kids & I towed my 30' travel trailer to Florida and back, I changed the Crankcase oil to Royal Purple 15w-40 and the Trans to amsoil synthetic. After 5000 Miles I changed the oil again to RP 15w-40. I have 2,000 mi. on that change, at 5000 I am going to take a sample change the filter and send it in to see what the analysis says. I will post the results when that time comes. But, I look at it this way, I bought the Excursion to tow my travel trailer and it does a heck of a job, it will maintain 70 MPH without breathing hard, faster if I wanted it. Ford no longer makes the Ex' or the 7.3, so I will try and do whatever it takes(or costs) to make it last a long long time, because, I don't know what I would replace it with, other that an identical one.

Another X Amsoil dealer that ran Amsoil Series 3000 5/30 for 2 years in my 2002 7.3 and almost 100k. All of a sudden my iron started going crazy in my Blackstone reports. Even after going to 3k changes, it was not doing well. I switched to Delo 400 15/40 and my reports went back to normal or below. I am not the first person to experience this. Delo is cheaper and better INHO than the synthetics. If you are running in cold country, then a lighter weight may be OK, but for me all I did was plug the block heater in and never had a cold startup issue. If anyone wants to see my Blackstone reports, just PM me and I will send them.
