Recently was a passenger in a 1999 F350 XLT, 4x4, SRW. The owner is a rancher. I've known him for a couple years (and know him to be a very straight shooter) and knew he "had a diesel" but didn't know what it was. We live about 4 hours a part so not much contact except via phone and usually pertaining to business.
(Yeah, I know I'm a little long winded)
Anyway, here I am sitting in the passenger seat of his truck, look over at the odometer and see 411,307 miles. Wow! I figure he's probably a gear head and devotes some amount of attention to keeping the mechanicals of his truck in top shape (the cosmetics are what you'd expect for a ranch truck, a little beat) so start asking him questions about what he does to his truck, what add on he has, etc etc. He's got NOTHING!! No chip, no coolant filter, no oil bypass, no after market air cleaner, no add on tranny cooler, no oil proof boots for the turbo, no 208 degree thermostat, no after market HPOP or fuel system additions. Just Nothing. Further more he doesn't know a huge amount about all this stuff I was asking him, just kind of as blank stare. I looked under the hood and sure enough, bone stock. He takes it in to his local shop on occasion. He does do frequent oil changes. He's had the tranny flushed twice and the coolant system flushed once. He's had to replace an alternator and one thermostat. He hasn't had transmission trouble. He has the original water pump (how can that be?), he's replaced some ball joints. He does a moderate amount of towing.
Kind of takes a little wind out of plans for additional mods to my truck but I'll be doing them anyway ......because I think, like many tings in life, you think your reasons are rational and logic based but psychology plays a huge part :icon_wink:. --For whatever reason I get enjoyment out of it and figure I'll be keeping the truck forever so what the heck. Maybe more psychology than reason, eh?

My brother-in-law has a GMC 1500, around 1990, I think 410,000 on the odometer. It is the same kind of thing. Small stuff like alternator, etc. The transmission has started shifting hard into 2nd, but that is the only thing wrong with any major components. He got 80k miles out of the factory tires. I keep telling him to contact GM and see if they want to do an ad about it, or maybe buy the truck from him and do an autopsy.

Please excuse the reference to a non-ford vehicle.

A laser directed hit into my fun zone, ouch! I also see stock high mileage PSD's, mostly the 7.3 model, on construction sites. I freely admit that I tried a few mods when I got my truck in 02 just for the fun of it. Some, didn't produce much if any change, ooops still had fun playing with it. A few, like the DAHL filter, coolant filter, trans cooler, BTM muffler and change to ELC produced definite measurable positive indications. Some of the fuel mods, well that is harder to measure and quantify. Was the harpoon worth the 3 hour job it took to drop the tank and clip the vent, was to me just in reducing aggravation filling up all those times the last 9 years. Was installing a AD injector in my # 8 cylinder justified? Yep, that chipmunk in a can sound went away after that.
This was discussed on the forum years ago, what were the lifetime estimates of the 7.3? There was a published lifetime table for the units that indicated 50% of the units would have a significant repair in 200k or something like that. I don't remember the specific data but you get the point. That would mean obviously that 50% would not have a significant repair in 200K. I bet some of the Administrators remember this and have that info right at the tip of their finger. That B engine lifetime scale would progress out the mileage scale with some units getting very high mileage without a significant repair. But bottom line, when I bought my truck I intended to keep it a long time, put a lot of miles on it and have some fun with it. So far it has fulfilled all three milestones.

I have just a little less than 190 on my 2000 and I have ran it hard and towed 20K trailers and spent a lot of time on rough roads. I have replaced the water pump once, the glow plug relays 3 times, the cam position sensor once (under recall) and am on my 4th set of batteries. Other than that, no repairs. I have a large volume airfilter setup and 4" exhaust from the turbo back. 400K sounds pretty good to me!
