I have a 93 idi 4x4 Borg 13-56 3.55s 9.00 16 tires with yet another smoked E4od this is the 5th Tranny in 100k have had a couple diffrent builders with the 4r100 upgrades they don't hold up. I haul heavy off-road frequently and im wanting to do a full custom adapted 6 speed medium duty such as a fuller, eaton, spicer with divorced t case. Have done this before with gassers but out of my league on what tranny to look for with close ratio and a tall final gear any suggestions at all?

It seems that I recall seeing a 6 speed in a Ford, but I don't remember what truck, also don't remember what year. I do know that it was a diesel engine, probably an early powerstroke. It seems it was bigger than an F350.

Probably a fleet f650 platform tow rig or something such as that. I'm hoping to essentially make my f350 able to take the driveline punishment a medium duty truck can without the added 6 thousand pounds. Trust me moving a 36k pound load with a 1 ton gets pretty sketchy off-road and when you need power you need it to stand and deliver.
idis may not be severe duty war horse but you'd be amazed what you can really do with one with just a few internal updates to the engine

Didn't Ford offer a 6 speed during the early 2000's in the F-250's? I have a friend that has about a 2004 Dodge/Cummins 3/4 ton and it came with a 6 speed. Thought Ford did the same but it's too early for me to think straight.:smile2:

Thanks, that's what I thought. Seems like someone told me the only difference between it and my ZF 5 speed is 1st in the 6 speed is compound low like the ancient 4 speeds from years ago.

I did find a zf5-47 with tease ready to go pretty cheap but does anyone know how rugged these transmissions are? Keep in mind I've hit the scales total weight at 49 thousand pounds and take these loads off-road. Begging for trouble and nothing is gonna take the punishment for long periods I know but anything is better than a tranny every 15k miles

You can Google any of these ZF's and if you dig around you can find the max torque ratings they were designed for. Of course as you know, how a trans is treated depends on longevity, I've known guys who could break an anvil. I talked to a trans shop owner years ago and he said he never sees the ZF's, in other words they're very trouble-free. Most of the mileage on my ZF has been towing and at 247,000 all I've ever done is change the oil every 80,000 however 49,000 lbs. is asking quite a bit IMO. 50,000 lbs. is generally a legal load for a semi plus the 30,000 lbs. that the tractor and trailer weigh. Generally the most I've towed is 12,000 plus the weight of my pickup.

I hear you there 49,000 I've only hit once I've been at 40k several time guess I should mention I'm running 2 ton military axles 14 springs and airbags and that the 49k load was only 14 miles to move an oversized dragline to a new location lol believe me the dot paperwork is not worth it. Empty with trailer I'm 19,200 depending on fuel tanks and toolboxes but from what I'm seeing about the zf5s I think I'll get 75k miles out of one before I snap a gear or loose a synchro. As long as I don't break the casing I'm happy I know I need to start a build for bigger platform but eh time and money hard to do so. I think the manual trans with ramisol clutch will get me a lot farther than and e4od did. Considering most of my towing is off road 3-8 mph in low range I think it will handle it a lot better short term
