So I have what I would describe as a rasping sound at the front of the motor on the bottom. I can hear it at idle at any temp but sometimes I cannot hear it when the high idle solenoid is active.

When i open the hood the sound is definitely down toward the bottom on the front of the motor. Listening from either wheel well I can only tell that it is coming from the front.

I can hear it over and above the normal diesel rattle.

Any ideas? I'm sure everyone is sick of engine noise questions and so I appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

My finest and most educated WAG.... would be the power steering pump or PS cooling lines.

Come on OkieGringo it's not that hard if you have fan clutch wrenches, I did mine 10 years ago but I had to pull the radiator with the fan on the water pump. Rad is heavy as heck if you know what I mean. What's up OKie?

You don't have to pull the radiator...
Simply cut your fan shroud in half and unbolt it, then remove it. Once the shroud is out it's a cakewalk...you'll just have to use something to patch the shroud back together when you're done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

To see if the bearings are shot on your waterpump, take the belt(s) off and try to wiggle the pulley on the front of the pump. Good ones will have a slight bit of in-and-out play, but not any side-to-side.
If you haven't been keeping up with your SCAs, this is the perfect opportunity. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif
