Bought the truck in Nov. '05 and a new starter had just been put on. This am sounded like starter was spinning but would not engage flywheel. Could the replacement have been defective or maybe just not tightened?? Any ideas? Also, truck getting harder to start. When cold need to key the ignition a few times until truck starts and when it finally does, boy does it SMOKE (white smoke) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

when the batteries get low they will wear your starter out fast....powerstroke needs to spin over fast to start...replace the batteries as well...you could have burned up the new starter with weak batteries...

Thanks for the advice. Turns out terminals were corroded on both batteries. Cleaned them up nice. I also figured that while I had the batteries diconnected I would check the starter. Good thing I did!! All three bolts holding the starter on were loose enough to be removed by hand. A few more trips and I would have had big problems.
