My friend has an '02 F-350 with a "no-start" condition that I haven't been able to figure out. Here's what happened.
He was driving home from work, low fuel light came on, but was close to home so he checked the overhead console (which I grilled him for), the console said he had 58 miles to empty, so he figured he would get fuel in the morning on the way to work. About 5 blocks later he said he suddenly lost power and the truck died. Called me up and I took him some fuel.
I hooked up 2 sets of jumper cables, my diesel to his, to keep the batteries charged for the cranking that ws to come. I cycled the key 5 or 6 times to refill the fuel bowl. Cranked initially for about 10 seconds with no result. I told him to cycle the key for me while I listened to the fuel pump to be sure it was working... it was working fine. I cycle the key a few more times to be sure the bowl has enough fuel to at least fire the truck. I crank again, about 15 seconds this time, still nothing.... crank speed is fine, but still no attempt to fire.
I finally decide to open the fuel bowl and check the level and filter, everything looks fine. I have him go to the back and see if I'm puffing any smoke when cranking (nighttime now, can't see myself), he says it smells like raw diesel. I've checked the fuel cutoff, it's fine. Checked all the fuses, all look good. I have no access to a code reader, until I order up my AE that is.
Any helpful thoughts or ideas?
