I've read every thread containing "steering wheel" in the archives.

All good info, but not enough for me.

My floppy sloppy wheel finally started giving me fits. Got the last small bearing from the dealer.

In his picture, going from the bearing outward to the wheel are these items.

Bearing
split ring
thrust sleeve
spring
clip
plastic piece
wheel
nut

When I tore down, there was much garbage in there. literally loose ball bearings and such.

I put the bearing in, no prob.

When I tore down, I didn't see a split ring. I don't know which direction it goes. Anyone?

Also, there is a wide groove in the shaft, does the split ring go there? or up against the bearing instead?

I did have a thrust sleeve. I assume the spring goes against the sleeve, but when mine is all together there is zero compression on the spring. Shouldn't the clip compress the spring some?

Anyone with some ideas for me? Thanks.

done already,

The parts are so small and low resolution that it's impossible to figure out which way that tapered split ring goes, for instance, and also does it seat snug against the bearing? or does it lay in that groove on the shaft?

Luckily, the old bearing outer metal was there so I could tell which way to face the new bearing.

if by split ring you mean a snap ring then it goes bearing thrust washer spring then snap ring then your turn signal cancelation cam

no, not the snap ring. The snap ring goes directly after the spring, I think.

There are three items on that upper shaft between the snap ring and the bearing.

One of those items is the spring, and the two closer to the bearing are two bushing type things. One has a fat lip on it that is also the seat of the spring opposite the snap ring.

The other is this tapered washer/bushing thing that is split. I didn't find one of these on my upper shaft when I tore down. Just gleaning the wisdom of those that have tore down before me.

I can buy that. I didn't see anything like that when I tore down. I was just going off the dealer's picture, go figure.

Assuming that there is only bearing, washer, spring, snap ring. Does the washer orient with the flange toward the bearing or the flange toward the spring?

Just to be clear, when I say "flange", I mean the wide rim of the washer that the spring butts up against.

On all of them I did that washer was tore up from getting shoved down in the bearing when all the balls fell out so I just used a flat washer but I would say the flange goes up in the spring /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Ok, figured it out by trial and error. I wish I had access to those awesome pictures you posted beforehand.

This one in particular addresses what I was flumuxed over.

The "tolerance ring" in that picture is what I was referring to as "split ring". I did try one of the above suggestions about leaving it out, and while it was better than before (basically no bearing at all) it did still have quite a bit of looseness.

So I slapped the tolerance bearing in and all is good.

Thanks for the pics. They do confirm what my muddling about also told me.

NOW, if I can only locate a source of that triple ring in back of the steering wheel, or a cheap used steering wheel to steal it from. Anyone!
