Lately I've noticed that my tranny doesn't feel like it's shifting as firm as it used to. About a month ago, I installed a DP-Tuner 4 position chip with the PMT1 transmission programming. For about the two weeks, the transmission shifted like a champ with the new programming, firm and solid. I've done very little WOT driving other than to race a duramax one time and to see what the chip would do in the 120hp setting.. Even then, I waited till I got to about 60mph before I let her rip. For about the past week or so, the transmission seems to be sluggish feeling when TC lock up occurs. When up shifting from 3rd to over drive with the TC locked up, it's not firm at all anymore. More like the lazy shifting I had with the stock tranny programming.(pmt3) If the tranny shifts down from over drive to 3rd during acceleration, the RPM's raise a little then lower once the TC locks in and grips. Couple weeks ago, it would down shift firm and the TC would stay locked. Its probably staying locked now, just slipping. Any ideas? TC going out? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Time to upgrade the TC, the lock-up clutch has given up the ghost. I would contact John Wood at JWTT.com for the skinny on upgrading to the 6.0 TC.

Thanks for the reply.. I had acctually read on a different post where you talked about the 6.0 TC and was wondering what the cost would be. I have 72k on my truck now and have 3k more on the warrenty. Any chance the dealer would install a 6.0 TC in a 7.3 under warrenty?

Don't count on it...you need a spacer and adapter from John to make it work and I'm sure your average line tech would look at you funny if you tried to get them to install the 6.0 TC with the parts. The good news is the updated 7.3 converters are much stronger than the one that came with your truck. Just doesn't have the lower stall and thicker front plate of the 6.0 TC.

What changes did they make in the updated converters to make them stronger?

From what I understand, Ford's TC's for the 6.0 and 7.3 are now the same except for the stall speed. You'll have to search for the part #. I never made note of it. Or you might try contacting Greg Evans. He was the one that mentioned it.

They are the same except for stall speed and the 6.0 TC has a thicker front plate. That is why the 6.0 TC needs the spacer, the thicker front plate tends to take up the "free play" space when installing it in a 4R100.
