I'd like all those with working(job) F550 to give me some info. I just recently pulled 11.5 tonne dozer and trailler weight, and the truck suprised me on how stable it was and awsome the brakes worked, both truck and trailler. Power was good but it lost out on slight grades that were few miles long, it had truble keeping 100kph.
My question is is I were to get lats say SCT tuner for it will it cause any long term problems for the tranny on tow mode? be it in mind that I occationally pull that much, and often carry 5 t or pullying 7t I also have a modifeid AIRAID intake and muffler delete pipe. Thanks

Hey adamm,I'd say that's darn good, pullin' upwards of 30k # (trk and trlr) at 50mph (100kph) up a lite grade . I had a '03 F450 with the 6.0 and 6spd man, and hauled around 28k # and didn't run that well. I think an SC program would help out the lower end a bit and give just the right amount to maintain the grade. Add a cooler and synthetic AMSOIL to the trans and away you go. Good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

Adamm:

I have an 03 F-450 6-spd. No muffler, empty cat, and Edge juice. I regularly pull my 5th wheel (~16000lb) in the hills of East Tennessee and surrounding area. I can pull a 6% grade at 70mph in overdrive with the Edge box set on 75hp. Exhaust temp stays under 1300, unless I switch the Edge to 100hp, then it climbs fast. And, I have the 4.30 gears. The 4.88's should make yours better on the hills.

Hope this is helpfull

It's even better than that...100kph is 62mph. Not bad at all.

Thanks andy. I'm thinking of puttin in a 4" or 3.5"(if 4" won't fit) down pipe before the SCT tune. In your oppinion what type of tune is best for us that use our truck mainly for haulling or towing a considerable amount of weight? eg. tow, tow plus, or what ever else.
Does mpg suffer with SCT tune? I average 7 mpg now(truck weighs 10800pound empty, with 4.88 rear /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif) Is their a tranny tune that I can get that will help with the work truck? Thanks.

I10HaulR: I get ~14mpg empty, mostly highway. Pulling the trailer I get 8-10 depending strongly on speed and "hilliness". The fifth wheel trailer I pull is a high front, so it catches a lot of air.

Adamm: I don't know that much about the tuners, since I have an Edge box. I know I can't pull with the Edge in 100hp: it will send the exhaust temp soaring after a few seconds of a hill pull or acceleration. I haven't tried an aftermarket exhaust either. I just deleted my whole exhaust from the muffler back. It ends just past the back of the cab. I also have the 6-speed manual, so I if I have shifting issues it has nothing to do with the computer!

Yes, my mileage did improve overall with the Edge box, in 50 or 75hp modes, but in 100hp mode it goes back to about the stock range. Of course it definitely makes more power! I was getting about 7.5-8.5 running stock pulling the trailer before.

Oh, and "modifying" the EGR to be closed all the time will help with mileage some too. And, save dumping soot in your intake.
