Truck is a 2001 F250 4WD auto 7.3 with 190k. All stock except DP tuner with 60 tow and 80 eco and gauges. I left FL this morning to play in a poker tournament in Biloxi. Truck ran fine from FL to the MS line. I stopped at the welcome center to use the bathroom. Leaving the welcome center, merging back onto the interstate I decided to let the old girl show me what she has. I was rolling about 30mph and hit it to the floor. Ran it from 30mph to 75mph with it firewalled and let off.

Looked back to see my black smoke and saw some extra white smoke too. Not coming from the pipe just out from under the truck. Truck started losing power and I looked at my boost gauge which read 0. Temp seemed OK. SES light came on and truck lost more power. I figured I lost the turbo and that I would need to get to the next exit to give it a look. Didn't make it. I was slowing down to pull off the road and the truck died.

Got off the highway and popped the hood. Oil everywhere! The whole back half of the underside of the hood was covered with oil. When I lifted the hood, the oil was dripping onto the wipers. That’s how much oil was sprayed in there. The whole top of the motor was covered. Also, oil continued dripping under the truck. I couldn't really tell where it was coming from because there was so much over everything already. I got some friends and a trailer and we loaded it up and towed it back to FL.

I'm sure I am not the first one to have this happen so I would appreciate any suggestions on what could have failed. There was no noise, no crash or clank, just oil spewing until there wasn't enough to run the injectors any more. My instinct says a seal on the turbo blew, but I honestly don't know enough to say why I think that.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a high pressure oil leak. You should be ok. Clean it up real good, fill up the hpop resevoir and check for leaks after it starts. The most common are the hpop oil lines. Could also be leaking from a plug on the oil rail, icp, or at the pump itself.

Yep, what galexander said.

When you romped on it, the HP oil pressure went to max and probably blew out an o-ring. Makes a big mess, but a relatively simple fix.

So is there a seperate fill for the high preasure oil pump or do I need to just fill the main and see where it is slinging out when I crank it. I am looking at the Hayes manual becuase I don't have the truck at my house right now and I don't see any other place to fill.

I'm getting some oil and a bunch of degreaser in the morning and will report back what I find. Thanks so far.

theres an allen fitting on top of the hpop u can fill from there

It will fill on it's own from the main. ... If you pull the IDM relay it will keep it from starting while you crank ...

It won't start until it reaches around 500psi oil pressure. It's pretty easy to fill up the resevoir. Here is a pic: HPOP_plug - TheDieselStop.Com Photo Hosting

edit: if you want to control the starting pulling the relay is not a bad idea. You could also probably pull the fuel heater/pcm fuse. Should be number 30 in the owners manual.

Update. Founf the leak. One of the steel braid high preasure oil hoses ruptured. You guys nailed it. Question though, does the hose detach from the connections at the pump and the head or is it all one piece?
All once piece with quick disconnects from the fittings on the HPOP and Head. Dealer item. You can make a tool to remove them with an OLD THIN points wrench, filed down to be thinner. It needs to fit over the pipe,, (See the 2 red arrows on the side. But not that black sleeve. IIRC it pushes towards the hose to release. BUT IF it doesn't go easily that way, try the other then. Been a while since I took the only one off I have messed with.

Cool. Got the hose from the dealer for the sum of $118.25. Couldn't get the tool for removal, but did go to auto zone and got a Ford clutch removal tool. It fit well enough to get the fittings off (had to disconnect one sensor and one fuel line for the hose on the pump. Pinned it back up and she runs again. Thanks for the help!
