My truck is white so I've put it longer than I should have but it only makes removing hard water stains harder. Anyone had any luck or extreme misfortune trying to remove hard water stains?

I'll second the clay bar. My white '97 had some pretty severe hard water deposits from the wife parking next to the sprinklers.

It took quite a bit of rubbing, but they came off, and the results were excellent - a coat of wax and it looked (and felt) better than new.

You know I would feel terrible about wasting peoples' time with a dumb question so I tried alot before I asked. The clay bar was one. No luck. These stains are REALLY on there!

Sorry - didn't know what you had tried...

You might have to resort to a chemical approach, something like this

Yup, Vinegar and Water. I keep a bottle with me all the time in the boat stuff. It's the only thing that takes the hard water spots off of the boat after an afternoon in the sun. My other boat was BLACK. I will never own another black boat.

I dilute the vinegar 50/50 with water.

I use this on the jet skis. It is probably just water and vinegar.

YEP...always had a spray bottle on my old Crownline and it took the water spots right off my blue stripe every time. 50/50 mix for me too. Man, I can't wait to start boat shopping next season /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I tried vinegar and clay bar's in the past with no luck at all, the only thing I have found that actually worked was Megulars deep crystal paint cleaner. Its a bit of work, but stripped off 6 years of water spots from the previous owner.

I just saw this thread after posting one about clay bars. Today I tried a Mothers clay bar and the chemical that comes with it. NOTHING. Total waste of money. I tried a variety of other window and paint cleaners with almost zero results. Also tried vinegar clear up to full strength. Nada.

Then I tried AJAX on a tough old sponge and that took all the water spots off the glass but I dont want to hit the paint with that abrasive stuff.

I also think a clay bar is a worthless item. Mothers has a three step product that I like as well as anything I've ever used. The step one cleaner should remove water spots.

i used the mothers clay bar cleaning and wax kit yesterday. the clay bar did not take any of the hard water spots out but it did clean the paint MUCH better than just a washing. again it did not do much for the water spots, but after using it and using the mothers cleaner wax, the surface looks and feels like glass. i would like to find something that would take those water spots off though.

O use McGuire's deep paint cleaner. Followed by their polisher. And finish it off with their carnuba wax. It's not something can be done right away as each step is time consuming to apply and wipe off. Never fails to take the hard water spots and I've got hard well water where I live. It's worked on every vehicle I've owned.

Or you can have a softener installed in your home. Your appliances such as the dishwasher, and water heater will last longer, and you will use less soap. Keith

I had the same problem on my white F250 and Blue Z06 ... I was told to try White Vinegar also and it worked pretty well... A bottle is pretty cheap at any grocery store so it's a small investment to make compared to anything Meguiers makes... Like they said above, just remember to rinse thoroughly and get a good coat of wax on ASAP afterwards...
