I am getting parts together to build my appleseed. I orginally saw the Trucks! program. Did my research and now I am building an appleseed.

I have a couple questions.

If I use a water heater for the main mixing tank like in the appleseed design, how do I tell when I have the proper amount of VO in the water heater? How are people measuring this?

Second question. Where are you getting the parts that fit the barrels openings? To make the standpipe wash tank.

There are two major tubes on the outside of the Appleseed. One clear tube is used as a sight glass to show how much oil in in the reactor.

Ok, I see the clear hose.

How do you know the first time how much you are putting in? I was trying to get an easy idea here. I can manually measure the VO I guess.

Next question, what wattage 110v element is everyone using? Do I hook this straight to 110v or thru the thermostat on the water heater? They have a 1500 watt for $8 at Lowes. Is that enough?

To re-ask this question. I don't know where to look.

www.localb100.com/cbt/standpipewashtank

has a parts list. You'll have to find a 2" b y 3/4" threaded bushing, which can be a little difficult to find at home depot/lowes. you may be able to find the parts in PVC (but dont' use PVC valves, the handles will give you fits!) for the 2x 3/4" stuff. I think b100supply.com has the item for sale also...

I ordered my 2" x 3/4" bushings from Grainger industrial supply. Home Depot cut the longer threads on the 3/4" black iron pipe so it would thread through the 3/4" bung and also allow screwing on an ell on the outside.

Remember to avoid galvanized. Go with black iron on the pipe and fittings.

I got my 2 x 3/4 bushings at the local Ace Hardware. They had a much better plumbing selection than HD or Lowes

Sometimes you're just stuck with a bit of galvanized- it's VERY hard to find a 2" by 3/4 bushing that's not galvanized...

by the way I find Home Depot to be very disorganized in their plumbing section, and expensive. Lowes if you have one tends to be a lot cheaper and better organized.
