anybody know any tricks to replacing the passenger side axle pivot bushing? its a split axle, 4wd, w/leaf spring (not sure if they come with coils or not but this has leaf) on a 94 f250.

just wondering if i absalutely have to drop the axle or if there's a better way to go about it, i see a lot of bolts breaking and a lot of cussing in my future and i'd like to avoid it if posssible :icon_wink:

been having problems with the Death Wobble and im thinking its this bushing, i noticed the springs are barely hitting the overload bumper because when i back up the wheels pull apart and it moves the axle over about 3 inches.. of course it moves back when i pull forward but because that play is there its giving the wheels opportunity to wobble like a mother %$#@! when ya hit a funny part in the road:icon_mad:

so any suggestions would be helpfull, ive never replaced one of these before and i was told i needed to drop the axle to do it but i figured i'd check to see if anyone had a better idea first, thanks!

I have a 90 f250 and I replaced the pivot bushings last summer. Honestly, you might as well do both of them if you're going to get in there.

What I did was support the axle assembly with a 2x10 board, unbolt the leaf springs & shackle, and unbolt the pivot bolts. The 2x10 board was to hold the whole axle with one jack and two 2-ton jack stands on the ends for support, slowly working it down. I was able to lower the whole axle assembly down in one piece (with drive shaft unbolted).

This let me avoid pulling apart the 4x4 components other than the drive shaft from the transfer case.

You might want to inspect other bushings as well, there might be others that are worn and aggravating the problem. I recommend just replacing them all if they're worn, I'm big on only having to tear stuff apart once. Also, look into polyurethane bushings instead of rubber, I've found that they are firmer and hold up longer. I found mine on SummitRacing, a recommendation from other members as well.

Good luck!

The hard part about the job is getting the axle back into the pivot. Also getting the bushings into the axle. That is, if you don't have a proper puller, which I didn't. I got the old ones out with an air chisel; removed the insides then crushed it. Did a little scarring to the axle, then installed those Energy Suspension poly bushings, also bought them from Summit. They should outlast the rest of the truck.

I went ahead and dropped the axles from the springs because I had to do new front shackle to spring bolts anyway...
