I'm trying to learn if anyone has added the Ford tailgate mounted backup camera to their truck in conjunction with a stereo upgrade.

I camera seems to be very good and it would be in the right place but not sure what parts would cost and if it compatible with anything other than Ford

I want to do the same thing. The Ford nav unit will take any standard NTSC camera input. A camera is cheap on ebay. My 2010 F350 does not seem to have the wire harness. You would need to run wires from the camera all the way to the back of the nav unit. I am not sure what connector to get for the back of the nav unit to make connection easy.

I had looked into this for someone else a while back and cost alone made it just not worth it. The tailgate handle assembly and camera list for ~$450 and that did not include any necessary wiring or the video display (radio or mirror). Maybe things are a little more available today (i.e. ebay), but I really have not looked anymore into it.

Here are a couple of part numbers I saved that may help you in your searches...

Tailgate Handle: 8L3Z-9943400-AC

Camera: 8C3Z-19G490-A

You should have 5 wires coming from the camera. White/brown-12 volt,black-ground,white/green-video+,brown/violet-video-,and black/white-will not be used. White/brown goes to a switched 12v, black goes to a good ground, on the video wires you cut end off a RCA cable,white/green goes to the inner wire,brown/violet goes to the outer wire, and the black/ white is not used. Then you just run to a switched 12v and run the RCA to your camera input on your headunit

If it is too expensive to buy it new at the dealer you might be able to get it a lot cheaper from a salvage yard. There are a lot of them across the country and you can also find them online. One of the places that has them all listed and you can even search my car/truck model to find what you need is copartfinder. They are part of a large auction company and it has the yards listed on there with pics in most cases.

Hello
I was wondering where you guys got your 2008 or later tailgates? I have a 2006 F-350 that i want the Tailgate with the camera, I understand it is just a matter of changing the driver side hinge? Did anyone notice a a little bit of a bow where the tailgate lines up with the truck along the sides of the tailgate and where the tail lights are?

I put 2010 rear bumper/tail gate/rear brake lights(on my 2000) and everything seems to line up nice. Are you using your 06 tail lights with the new tailgate? Maybe thats the problem? Those new rear brake lights stick out past the body and maybe compensated for the bow in the tailgate.(that is just a guess)

I saw the bow on another forum where a guy had put on the tailgate with the old lights still on, I do not have a tailgate yet, still trying to find the best place to get one. If anyone knows a good place and price for an 08 or later tailgate that would be great!

Aftermarket Nav, Bluetooth, Backup Camera

I took the approach of installing an aftermarket backup camera in the tailgate. Here are the details…

I recently purchased a used F350 which had an aftermarket nav installed but didn’t have a line-in which I needed. Back in the day I paid my way through college installing car stereos so I thought I’d take a crack at overhauling the stereo system in my new (used) truck.
Here’s what I ended up with.

  • Kenwood Excelon DNX6960 - $789.99 on Amazon

  • Garmin nav

  • Bluetooth

  • Backup camera input

  • ·SWI-JACK (Steering wheel interface) - $41.99 on Amazon

  • Allows for controlling the radio with the steering wheel controls (Media, volume, track)
  • 3 backup cameras

  • Tailgate for everyday driving

  • Hitch for connecting trailer

  • Connection for travel trailer backup camera
  • Putco 401027 Tailgate and Rear Handle Cover - $34.42
This is a chrome tailgate handle cover with a hole for the backup camera·

  • Pyle - PLCM24IR; Universal Mount Infrared Commercial Grade Rear View Backup Camera - $34.00 on amazon.com
This camera fits the putco tailgate handle cover

  • Custom iPod jack including USB and Video
The whole reason I started this process was for a line in. I reused the factory line-in and then added USB and Video.

I’d be happy to share any wiring info, pictures, etc. with anyone who is interested.

Does the factory nav have the rca jacks or anything for the camera wires to plug into?
I don't believe so. You can purchase a "Lockpick" unit and it gives you the option of adding a 2nd camera (on the front or something" as well as nav and dvd control while driving.

I took my headliner out this past weekend to get some paintless dent removal(PDR) done after a hail storm last week. There are wiring harnesses that travel up each rear pillar to the roof with a grey plugs on them that control alot of things in the truck. I had them unplugged with my headliner hanging down and went to move my truck and had no radio/nav/camera or interior lights. The tire pressure monitors and brake system were also flashing on the info center. My point being, several of the components are wired through these 2 plugs that are at the top rear corner of both pillars. It would be a nightmare to try and trace down the wiring on these trucks since wiring in all the way back in the rear pillar controls your head unit.

Oh and BTW... DO NOT purchase the cheap cameras on eBay. I had 2 of them on my previous truck and everytime it rained, they got water in them and the lens fogged up for weeks. By the time they dried out, it rained again or I was washing my truck. They were no where near the quality of the factory camera either. Just my .02
