A friend of mine who has a 2001 F-350 PSD was telling me about how the engine seemed like it was cutting out while he was driving on the highway today. He thought it might have something to do with the fuel system. To me it sounded like maybe a bad CPS. So I check for codes on his truck using my SCMT and found this

P0344 = Incorrect number of sync to transition counts detected, possible intermittent CMP sensor/circuit fault

Does this code mean that the problem is with the sensor itself or that the sensor detected a problem? I told him to get a new cam sensor, but I just wanted to check with you guys.
Thanks

Yep, get a new CPS immediately or he will be stranded on the side of the road...he is one of the lucky ones, he has actually be warned, most just suffer immediate death.

Yeah I was surprised about the code too. That is way I wasn't sure if it was the CPS. I think he already got one. Thanks for the replies.

Just replaced mine last week. Purchased from Power Stoke Parts and received it in two days! Popped it in and am now good to do. My truck was also missing out and dying at stop lights.

I'm sure im not alone with this but as much as i dont like giving ford any money, i got my ecm from the dealer and must have got a good deal because i paid 265$ including tax i think its a xpc4 or something like that. so just thought i would chime in that maybe if you put some pressure on them they will rethink there price.

You know the sad part about this is that my friend hasn't even changed the CPS yet! I even told him that he is lucky he got the code and the truck is still running, and it could die at any time. He said he hasn't had time to get to it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Now when the truck dies on the road I'll have to hear what a piece of crap truck it is.

I'm glad mine went out when it did, because the next week I was 4-wheeling up some serious mountains with a several hundered sheer foot dropoff about a foot away on one side of the trail and about 2 inches between the mountain and the other side of the truck. It would literally have been impossible to tow it out and I would have been blocking in lots of people while I figured out what was wrong and then driving 5 hours one way to get a CPS. So I guess my CPS going out (when it did) was actually a good thing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Yea, he needs to replace it sooner and not later.

I've got a couple of axle shafts for a 72 half ton chevy in my shed. You can have those. They'll do you as much good as a used CPS. The only difference is the axles won't fit in your glove box.

Don't waste your money.

I have a 99' F350 and I was leaving work today and my CK Engine light came on, at the same time the truck died momentarily. I also noticed last week about 2 times it did similar with no ck engine light. I stoped once on the way home to check on my boat trailer and started the truck and no ( CES )light came on. Drove straight home with no problems and run the dianostic check and read code P0344. I then went to my local Ford dealer ( Who is open till midnight) and purchased the CPS for $129 + tax. Took 10 min. to install, no more codes, runs great again. I got lucky and got it home. Old, some what working CPS and a 10 mm wrench went in the glove box for emergencey. I listen to my girl when she speaks.

[/ QUOTE ]Bobcat, the CPS does not have a letter code like you describe. That code sound like a PCM, the main computer for your truck. That price sounds cheap for a PCM. CPS is frequently in the range of $160-180 at a dealer but can be purchased from your local International dealer for less than $100. Dale at www.powerstrokeshop.com has a very reasonable price on them as well.
