This thread has been making me cringe for some time. As far as Zig's creds, they are the best in the IDI forums. There's been alot of stuff he has gotten into and documented for all to learn. But as far as the balance issue goes, I must differ. I do know Zig has been attempting to solve his vibration issues on his motor that comes in around 1800 rpm. I do understand the issues with balancing a motor, I have learned/worked and owned a engine machine shop and the advice his machinist is giving him is 100% dead on. But here's where I differ. IDI's are built to be industrial motors. there's enough tolerances designed in so a few ounces off on a rotational balance is easily asorbed. If there is a felt vibration, you definitely have a problem, I do agree there. If there is a signifigant difference between auto and manual trans motors, IH would have had a serious problem on their hands at the assembly line. Ford pickups are not the only vehicle that these motors went in, various chassis and transmission combos have been used. If the balance on these motors were so sensitive, IH would have a major problem on their hands. So will the salvage yards and engine rebuilders. When you go over to Ford and ask for a rebuilt crate motor, they don't ask you if it is auto or manual, they just want to know 6.9 or 7.3....simple. Honestly, I don't know why Zig has had this problem with his motor for all these years, I haven't physically touched it and torn down the insides to see. Only his engine rebuilder knows for sure. But the spread panic in the forums over an issue that the manufacturer, salvage resellers and rebuilders have never deemed to be a problem, is dangerous.
Bottom line....if you installed your engine or trans and don't have any felt vibration issues, you don't have a problem. Run it like you stole it, it'll live.
