Driving home from work and I noticed a little steady stream of white smoke. drove about 1 mile and by this time it was just pouring out when I would accelerate. parked the truck and checked the oil and prayed I wouldnt see a milky dipstick and NO OIL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif. Put 5 quarts and started it up again more white smoke but very little till I hit the gas it started barreling out again!

little smoke comming out of airfilter also

any ideas Im about to pinch a loaf in my pants! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif

My guess would be Injector O-Rings. My dad's 95 did the same thing and it was the O-Rings allowing oil in the combustion chamber.

Diesels will pump out white smoke when dumping oil in to the combustion chambers. He said he was 5 quarts down so I would say the source on the smoke is the oil.

When my turbo started to go, it started to pour out white smoke. Oil was getting dumped strait into the exhaust. Check your turbo for play.

Really find the culprit before you start throwing a turbo onto it. If the turbo is bad, it will be obvious when you check it,, if it is not bad then check the injector "O" rings as mentioned above.

A turbo can cost as much as you want to spend, are you going to stay stock? Or do you want to "Step up"??? LOL
Stock you can find them for 500 or so I bet... Dont know for sure, but if you check the for sale section of this sight, many have upgraded before their turbo went south,,and would sell stock ones reasonable I imagine.

Like you said I am waiting to get the diagnosis from my tech. Only if turbo out will I consider upgrading I am hoping for the best case scenario. used factory turbo.... not sure I would be willing to chance, I'd hate to have to put my truck back in the shop for the same issue down the line. but it is definately an option. once I have a total labor and parts I will be weighing the good vs the bad and $$$.

Thanks to all that have replied!

If it is the turbo, and you can swing the $$$, get the Garrett. REALLY happy with mine. I found the best price through Performance Truck Products (www.performancetruckproducts.com)...

If your turbo is rebuildable then do it yourself? I hear of guys doing that often on here... I think IF I was going to stay stock, or with a WW I would do that...maybe take the money you save and get an ATS housing too?
Nice truck,,, [ QUOTE ]

What did the smoke smell like?

White with a slight blue tinge in a PSD usually is fuel, maybe o-rings or a cracked injector nozzle.

White sweet smell=coolant Head Gasket

blue with a slight white tinge-smells like oil... is oil! turbo or Head Gasket

I just finished re-building mine (turbo); bought the re-build kit off ebay for $90 shipped, wicked wheel for $76 and the ATS housing for $400. VERY simple to rebuild. The guy I purchased the kit off of on ebay even has an offer that if you pay shipping he will balance the turbo parts for you...I didn't do that but if you have time (two days) then it is probably a good idea.

Simple: Remove Turbo, re-build, re-install...one day and save some big bucks for your new transmission in the near future.
